Re: carter carb

Welcome to AF, once it is running and the engine is warmed up, get a vacuum gage on it and turn each mixture screw in til the vacuum drops, then back out about 1/4 to 1/2 turn till you have the highest readings. This is done at an idle speed of about 650-700. In the future a little more info, stock engine, and what size? Yes you need a fuel filter, usually between the fuel pump and carb.

Re: carter carb

My dad had a 1970 Cutlass. Great car, strong engine, even though it was 'just' the 350 4bbl. (and not the 455)

The Carter is a great carb, quite sophisticated in it's design. Try this book for more info on tuning your carb. It provides lots of info on getting the best out of the carb.

Most carbs have multiple fuel/air circuits. The idle mixture is adjusted as above, but the mainjets are adjusted differently, as shown in this book.
