High Revs

Hi, just purchased a 2006 Freestyle AWD with the CVT (Transmission).

Anyone have insight as to why the engine would Rev high when going down a hill and your foot is not on the accelerator?

Was traveling at about 80-90KM (50-55miles) and proceeded down a fairly large hill. Took my foot off the gas and as we went down the hill the engine kept revving higher, up to about 3000RPM.

Tried this again on another large hill, put it into Neutral and the engine revved to 2000RPM. Seems kinda an oxymoron since CVT is supposed to be better on Gas.

Anyway,
Is this Normal in a CVT type Transmission?

Thanks in advance.

Re: High Revs

One thing about the CVT transmission is that if there is even the slightest hint of a problem, it will go into a fail safe mode, set troubles codes and start flashing lights.
Since this is not the case, I would suspect that it is normal programming. About the only thing that would cause a similar concern without the codes and lights, would be if the tires are not the original size.
At a specific RPM and a specific gear ratio, the transmission control module expects to see a specific MPH. If it doesn't it can cause the module to command a different ratio which would result in higher RPMs.
