Stuck In Park & Stuck Key Dealer Says New Shifter Needed?? $300?????????????

My 2000 Ford Focus got stuck in Park & while doing this the Key also cannot come out. Seems the shifter is tied in with the brake. The Ford Dealer says its a solinoid in the console & its a part of the shifter. They say you cannot buy just the solinoid but must buy the enter shifter for $300.00. I find this hard to believe. I used the temporary key slot near the shifter to allow me to shift gears . However the key is still stuck & sticking a screwdriver in that hole near the shifter is the only way that I can shift

Any Suggestions or anyone have similar problems & is it true??

Thank You

There should be a brake switch/sensor under the dash near the brake pedal. That sensor tells the car when you have the brake held down so it will allow you to shift into drive. The part should cost only about $20-$30, and if you're slightly mechanically inclined, you should be able to do it yourself with a Chilton's and some internet research. Hey, it'll save you $270 at least right?

I'd get a second opinon, find a fordguy/mechanic on the forums you can trust, and ask him if he can buy the part. If he can, you can.

It is true. I have replaced many of these shifters with the built in shift-lock.
