Questions about buying a used Mercedes! please!!

hi guys I am totally new here..
I just turned 18, and I am living in Minnesota which gets really cold and the road is quite a mess in the winter. I am attending a college in Montreal next year and thinking about getting myself a car..
so I have a friend who has a Mercedes 560 SEL, I LOVE IT, everything about it, the color, the style, and he is selling it for 1,000 dollars.
However, it has about 300,000 miles on there.. other than that, it functions perfectly
I am wondering if I should get it just because of the price and the style, I really don't want to miss out this great opportunity...but I learned that anything over 100,000 miles would be a bad buy. this one is way over, what should I do?
I love to get an old-fashioned car like this or a brand new Golf GT or Jeep Wrangler, which would be a better choice for me?
I also love old mustangs like from the 60s, or mercedes from old times.. but I do also want a car that could last for at least 4+ years
I am gonna be paying everything by myself so price does matter a lot

SO, that d be great if you have any opinions or hopefully suggestions on what I should get??!

also, is there any great resource that I could use when looking for used cars, or comparing cars?
