Well, at least they mean something....

I've yet to figure out what "Lanos", "Nubira", and "Leganza" mean

I don't know what Lanos Nubira or Leganza mean, but Nubira is fun to say. ;P.

I have never liked a car name that isn't a name, but a letter/number. Doesn't neccesarily mean I won't like the car, but I won't like the name. number/letter combos should be reserved for trim levels in my head.

I still haven't forgiven Acura for ditching the legend name(CL SUCKS). Why I will never like them.(yes I am contradicting myself, but hey it is my opinion I can contradict it where I see fit)

Dodge Power Wagon is a perfect description
Ramcharger is cool too
I think Mercury is an appealing brandname, much nicer than that other Ford aka Volvo. Pity it isn't allowed to flourish

But I reckon the best names belong to Studebaker.
STOO-DEE-BAY-KAHH
Even 'Studie' alone is wonderfully evocative and then dress it up with Cruiser (Land Cruiser too) Dictator, Challenger, Daytona etc

Maybe not unique to Oz but here the Mazda 323 is known in the trade as the 'Tarzan'
'tree-to-tree' ... get it?
Many years ago we were inflicted with the Datsun Cedric, which is about as nancy as you can get ... 'Dat-thun Thedric'

Worst are those ridiculous japlish ones. Imagine bragging to your mates down the pub that you've just bought a Guppy?
Or a Mazda Bongo van?
If they're good and loyal mates you'd probably and rightly get bashed by them if you admitted owning a Daihatsu Hi Jet Dumbo
Speaking of Daihatsus and crap model names, I recall a local road test of a Daihatsu 'Applause'. The tester hated the car, thoroughly detested it, moaning about low power, tinny build, underweight brakes and many other defects, and concluded by saying that .. "the Applause is only marginally preferable to the clap" ..

As for car names....

Nissan have had some gooduns and some bloody god-awful ones. They have the Pulsar, which I always thought was cool - being into stars and all. And the Primera - that's cool; like primeval or primal. Cool stuff. Then they have....tha Homy. The Laurel (where's the Hardy). The Gloria. The Silvia (sorry guys - it's not a good name ). The Cedric (bugger mentioned it before me!). Oh dear.

(Unfortunately I have to say I'm not at all sure that Skyline is a particularly strong name for a car. Godzilla is, though

And despite my predjudice against many American cars, I have to say they come up with some of the coooooooolest names: Mustang, Cobra, Viper, Trans-am, Firebird, Camaro. Beautiful names

Quote from Moondog: "Then they have ... tha Homy"

... geez - thats a bad one ... LOL !!

though I rather like the indefagidably US auto characteristics of a smooth highway ride and plenty of power
and those names are fantastic

'cept for the worrysome Chevy ((((impact))))

ps: ever heard of the "Three Little Buffalos"? (not kidding)

Cars don't necessarily need a "strong" name to have a nice fitting name. Since the Skyline was always the beast of the family, it seems appropriate to have a bit more passive secondary sports car. And whatever happened to the old tradition of naming vehicles of transportation with female's names? Or referring to them as "she"? I tell you, marketing has really infiltrated and assassinated culture.

As for Skyline, it may sound puny when placed next to a Firebird, but I also feel it's fitting because the most perfect image I get in my head of this car is seeing it cruise the night-fallen techno-electronic modernized streets of downtown Tokyo. It blends in with the city's skyline; a part of industrial night-life which has spawned the various 'midnight racing clubs' strewn throughout the country. And NO I don't play Tokyo Extreme Racer--this is just how I always thought of it.

Oh come on now, many people here try hard to pronounce European products the way they are pronounced overseas, so why doesn't the rest of the world pronounce American products the way it's pronounced here? I understand that many languages say zet, zed, zeta, etc. but there should be a few exceptions and the Corvette ZEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE ARE-WUN is one. Do german speakers say 'yeep' instead of 'Jeep'? Or better yet, do spanish speakers say heep?! (:hehehe: just razzin' your chain!)

I think Nubira has something to do with clouds. Lanos might be the same but I'm not sure. Leganza is obviously made up, but it has a nice ring to it.......Didn't the Acura Legend become the RL? And the Vigor became the TL, but in Japan they changed it from Vigor to Sabre. And isn't the CL a domestic-only product, being that it is also built on the domestic-only Accord coupe? I always thought this was the reason why that big zoomed up taillight on the cover of GT3 is a CL's taillight--to represent our side of the world, but I could be wrong. But yes, I HATE alphanumerics; the only one who should be able to get away with it is Porsche and Ferrari. Screw all that Japanese luxo-division sales crap, most of us enthusiasts will probably adorn ours with the home name-placards anyway.

a real c*%# of a car

Honda's new mini car - now called Jazz in some markets and Fit on others - was originally known as Fitta, a rude name for female gentials in Sweden. It took Honda some months to learn of its faux pas; it then hastily changed the badge in Europe to Jazz
