Questions About Installation of Aftermarket Sound System in 2007 Caravan SE

Greetings to all,

Shortly, I will be getting a 2007 Caravan SE. Currently, it has the OEM stereo it came with from the factory. It works fine, but since my GPS is on the verge of crapping out, I'm considering installing an aftermarket so-called 'Universal Fit' in-dash GPS/Stereo system in this vehicle.

As I have been researching this, I have come to discover that replacing the OEM stereo with an aftermarket system may be quite a challenge.

First of all, it appears that both Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep as well as GM have chosen to use non-standard sized stereos in their vehicle - so-called 'DIN and a half' AND that the depth of the cavity for the stereo is less than generous - according to the information I was FINALLY able to track down, the depth of the cavity in the Caravan SE is 7 3/4 inches, however I have been completely unable to find ANY information regarding the height and width of the opening provided for the OEM stereo.

I am wonderting if any of you fine people could help a fellow out with these measurements. I'd really appreciate it!

Another matter that has reared its ugly head during this most recent tour around the 'net concerns something electrical called a 'canbus'. Never heard of this animal before, but it apparently has a lot of folks pretty pissed off over C/J/D's decision to use it. Again, is there someone in this forum that can educate me about just what a 'canbus' is AND is this something that I am going to have to deal with IF I should decide to replace the OEM stereo with an aftermarket in-dash GPS/Stereo system?

Thanks for reading about my troubles (such as they are) and for any help you can provide in helping me come to a decision about this can of worms I seem to be trying to open!

TTFN!
