Rusted/Cracked Strut Tower

Hey. On my Talon the front right strut tower has rust and cracking from a right side hit and was wondering how I would repair this. Its about a fingers width and you could actually slide your finger across it for 3-4 inches. You can actually stick ur finger in there. Here is a pick of what Im trying to say but Ill get actual pics later.

The passenger strut tower, the blue area is all rusted and cracked and you can stick your finger in it. Would welding fix this and how would this effect me? Would it now be a good time to buy a front strut? Thanks.

Re: Rusted/Cracked Strut Tower

I think you can replace that whole stut tower area. If I'm correct EZ did it on his 2ga gsx. But as far as trying to fix or patch up the damaged part I wouldn't suggest that.

Re: Rusted/Cracked Strut Tower

You want to grind it down and see how extensive the rust is. When i bought my car the strut had broken through. You should try to do this as soon as possible because you could ruin your hood and possibly cause an acident. Here's a pic of what my car looked like. You can replace the entire part which goes from the front umper to the firewall, it's $250 from th dealer i can get you the part number if you want

Re: Rusted/Cracked Strut Tower

How is the install? Did you do it yourself or have a shop? Also, did you just go to any Mitsubishi dealer and order the part? Thanks

Re: Rusted/Cracked Strut Tower

Well i did it myself but i have a welder and air tools (mostly an air chissel) It wasn't that bad kind of just fit into place. Don't get me wrong it took some time but it wasn't all that bad.

Re: Rusted/Cracked Strut Tower

I had this problem on my 2001 Eclipse GT.

http://img829.imageshack.us/img829/4476/03091317481.jpg

I bought a spot weld cutter and an air chisel. I had a welder. there are a lot more spot welds than you think..

I found the replacement at jnztuning.com about $200 including shipping
