Repair tip of the day - fix those broken glove box hinges

So of course, my glove box hinges are broken.

Luckily, they both split cleanly right along the hole where the drift pins go in, so I figure I can use gorilla glue to put the split pieces back together. Glued them, clamped them over night and next day tried to put the drift pins back in. They instantly broke apart again.

Hmmm. So I decide to tape the pieces in place to keep them together till I could figure how to fix them better. Thing was, I realized I couldn't pull them apart to save my life...

Eureka!!! So I cut two pieces of thin duct tape, covered one hole, then pressed the tape firmly around the hinge and then back over the other hole. With an Exact-o knife, I trimmed the tape to the shape of the hinge, then using the knife, I cut out the holes where the screws go. I cut out the screw holes so the pressure from the screws will keep the tape in place.

Put in the pins, screwed it down, and there you go. Glove box fixed.

ya know...i've had my glove compartment out and i'm semi-familiar with it...but for the life of me i can;t figire out what your talking about lol. Your hinges at the bottom broke? or do you mean the stops? Pics would help...though, it's probably too late for that now since you've already got it back in.

Yeah, the hinges at the bottom. You know, where the box pivots. I guess you wouldn't notice it or care unless you had a set break, lol.

For a minute there, I was feeling pretty proud of myself

I know what you are talking about, my hinges broke last year about this time and the box fell out completely. I ended up going to the hardware store and buying small hinges and grinding then down to be the same size as the plastic hinges. Kinda hard to get it all back in, but that thing is solid...still would have been nice and easy to use this method

Well, I don't have pics cause I'm too lazy to take the box out again, but like you, Tourched, my glove box just fell completely out. It had been sagging for years, though. I figure one of the hinges was broken for awhile.

This tape method is really solid and I can imagine the fix lasting for years. I dont go into my glove box that often, so if the tape wears out, I'll just put on some new. The repair took like three minutes of very minor labor.
