Question $8000 98 318ti thumping - buy or not

I was looking at getting a 98 318ti but when I drive it it makes a thumping similar to what some others on this forum have said. I'm not sure what it is. It constantly thumps from what sounds like the front left tire. Any ideas? Other then that the car is a jewel.

Re: $8000 98 318ti thumping - buy or not

Hi, I'm a noob, but I have a similar problem on my 325. THe drive shaft attaches to the transmission via a rubber Flex disk. Mine got a rag caught between it and it's shroud and disintigrated.
UGH! Might be worth a look.

if it sounds like its coming from the front it may be control arm bushings. thats my opinion

If it's a control arm bushing, it will make the steering wheel shake when the brakes are applied.

Looks good

I had it looked at and the mechanic said that one of the wheel coils had been put in wrong. Go fiqure. He fixed it at no extra charge. The thumping is because the rims are a little misshapen and I need to get them replaced. Anyone know a good place for nice cheap rims??

Re: $8000 98 318ti thumping - buy or not

We had kinda the same problem with my mums 97' 323i when we bought it, turns out it was just the brake disk rotor had a little rust on it because it had been sitting in the BMW dealership for a while and they just gave it a light sand and it was good as new again, might be worth chekin out.
