I've seen this type of problem before in the 2001 3.1L motor. Once it was a bad upper O2 sensor, the second time happened after changing the air filter...when pulling the airbox apart, it jostled some dirt around and the first time it ran, it sucked the dirt into the mass airflow sensor. Pulled the MAS and cleaned the resistors in there with some electric motor contact cleaner (alcohol based) and problem was solved...

The engine is designed to bump up the idle when the A/C comes on.

hey there i have a 1998 chevy malibu like you all im going on vacation around the 1st and would like to take my car but i have a idle problem and a stalling problem at lights and one day i steped on the gas and the rpms drop in stead of going up and the engine matched what the tach was showing im very conserned as to what it is and when col and about 1000rpms idles fine and does not misses or die its all happens when its warm does not stall all the time. im about 800 miles to im due for a oil change and i have ran injector through there 2 and made no difference and the air filter was replaced just before i bought it 4 or 5 months back the plugs i changed them 4 weeks ago and the coils test fine so i have not a clue hope you can help me thanks shane

also it has know start to take longer to shift from gears and down shift

hello i have a 98 chevy malibu i did a tune up changed the intake manifold gasket and oil change all about a month ago. the problem is it has a hard start issue. this issue was before i did the gasket and tune up. i checked fuel pressure and it is within specs.

Have you checked the computer for codes, how many miles are on the engine, is this a cold and/or hot hard start... and any other info you can provide will help
