Exclamation Eww what the hell is this noise?

Ok call me crazy... but the cold weather is doing some nasty things to my dads CR-V... (2000 model w/ leather yadda yadda) well anyways I was taken her for a spin today and I slipped the front wheels and I guess the CR-V has that 4 wheel system and like the power was switched to the back or whatever the hell it does ~ but it was the MOST disgusting metal screaching noise ~ WHAT THE HELL IS THAT? It sounded like I curbed some rims real bad... but I wasnt near a damn curb, and I managed to do it again when I wanted to know if I was going nuts or not so I found some slippery stuff (ewww yeah it snoed up here!) and yanked the wheel and gunned it and sure enough it did it again!

The noise is coming from the rear... just wondering what the hell is going on ~ its a 2000... things arent supposed to be broken yet! hahaha, anyone got some ideas before I can talk dad into bringing it down to the dealer?

The noise you're hearing is the rear differential....if it continues to make whining noise change the rear diff oil...that'll solve your problems...but not permenantly though...you'll probably have to change it every 30 or even maybe 15 thousand miles....Honda messed up with the rear diff......

Yea probably the rear differential. As you noticed, honda didnt make many AWD cars because of that. They are mostly front wheel drive because they dont wanna deal with drive shafts and yadda yadda. Wait, but i guess they did make the S2000.

Wrong again genius. Honda did make AWD cars. The 4th gen civic wagons were AWD.

i am a honda tech at a honda/acura dealer... it is the rear diff fluid it needs to be changed every 15k or so.. i do it almost daily here.. jsut go to honda get a qt of dual pump fluid and a gasket. it takes one qt that will take care of it. if its been squeaking for a bit now, you might need to do it twice .

Talking Noise in Rear CRV

I had the same noise in rear end at ~ 40 K on '99 and the "Honda Specialist", said there is a bulletin to change the differential oil with a thicker (more viscous) type have not heard the noise for 10K miles!

Service bulletin says to flush & fill the rear differential 3 times & if the noise is still present - next step is to replace the rear diff. The noise is most common when making sharp turns at slow speeds

replace the rear diff and use the dual pump fluid only need to do it once no need to flush it. If it doesn't fix it the first time then you already have a problem.
