how difficult is strut assm removal
Guten tag aus Dresden, 12-2-04
I have found a strut assm. in a salvage yard for my 85 318i (in the US), here in Germany. I have no tools here, though I want to save over 80% on this USED part. Can I simply remove three or four nuts and the whole thing will fall right out? My "tuning-freak" -English students understand my raionale, but they don't possess technical expertise, and I'm in a jam bc I don't have my car to sample its removal. I will have a mechanic install it in a few weeks, Stateside. Very thankful for any guidance, Ty |

Re: how difficult is strut assm removal
Besides the trhee strut bearing mount nuts at the top, you'll need to remove the brake caliper, tierod and lower ball joint nuts and carefully seperate them without damaging their boots, remove the nut for the sway bar link to allow the lower arm to drop and remove the ABS and Pad wear sensor if so equipped.

ABS or std (baffled)
thanks again, people!
Got my vin number over the phone, seems not to be correct. Trying to know if my 85 318i has std or ABS system bc I'm about to pull a strut from the yard. Dealer there said it could be either way. My bimmer is Stateside, I'm in Germany and perusing a couple parts for my dinosaur, on her last binge. Found BMW VIN decoder sites but can't get it identified. Evidently, there's a problem with the last two letters and five digits Is there a definate solution from a remote locale Thx T. |

Re: how difficult is strut assm removal
The only difference in the struts is the wheel bearing hub that will come with a used one. Look into the hole [about14mm diam.] in the area of the wheel hub but on the INSIDE, there'll be a 6mm thread hole for the wheel sensor next to it. spin the wheel hub and look to see a toothed ring on the inside of that hub. This is the trigger wheel for the ABS sensor. This Strut will work on either vehicle [w/ABS or wo/ABS].
Best to you "Kamatsu" !! hope this helped. Last edited by jeffreyb4me; 12-06-2004 at 09:35 PM. |
