spl secrets needed
i'm going to start competeing in spl competitions. i have a 90 honda prelude with 2 Kicker Solo Baric L5's in a sealed box being powered by a Kicker KX 850.2 amp. My head unit is the Kenwood Excelon X979. I am using all Stinger wiring.
I was wondering if there is nething i could do to add dBs besides dynamating. |

under the new SPL rules (at least for USACI) they average the SPL for 3 different frequencies - so a band pass may not work as well as they used to.

i used to own these subs myself, i compete locally and have gotten 1st place in my class. I would suggest building a new PORTED box, try a slot ported box. I had only one 12L5 using a U-Dimension 2k1 amp. Basically 1000 RMS running to the sub and it handled it beautifully. Also find a BASS CD, i found w/ my sub it played loudest between 38-42 hz. I hit 143.3 dB w/ one 12L5 in a huge slot ported box tuned somewhere around 30 hz. Also my car wasn't sound deadened either, you need the right gear, but most cost effective upgrade would be changing your enclosure

Re: spl secrets needed
Bandpass box....right.
Okay, you are in luck. One of the guys on my team used to run a prelude so i made a quick phone call for you to get the specs from his old car. I assume that the L5 are 12s, so build a five cubic foot box for them, common chamber, sort of, i will explain later. Have the speakers facing forward into the car with a slot port off to the right(drivers side). The port should be 50 sq in so go 12x4.25 should be about right with a lenth of 12 inches. This would put the box tuning up to about 42-45 hz. You should use 55-58 hz as the burp freq for comps. Now for the interior. There is something called preloading of the subwoofers many people don't do. Place the woofers the smae distance from the top as from the bottom of the box. Now place the first woofer about 1.5 in to 2 in away from the side of the box without the port. Build a false wall on the other side the same distance away from the speaker, long enough to go 1/8 in past the magnet. Now for the second woofer, place it on the other side of the wall the same distance as the first woofer and do this again. This will allow the speakers to pressurize the same amount of air. If you don't do the wall or preload them, one speaker will move more then the other causing a loss in spl and speaker life. I might also recommand upgrading you amp. I suggest an earthquake d2. Enough power to push your subs and can be bought for a low price. Hope this helps and see you in the SPL lanes.
