This is a pic of a door panel I made out of fiberglass. There are a lot of things wrong with it, but it was my first major project. To start off I removed my door panel from my car, covered it in masking tape then laid fiberglass. If I were to do this over I would have ripped all the vinyl and cloth off the door panel then used that as a frame. That way it would be easy to mount and there would be a nice backing behind the fiberglass. After I was done laying the glass, I cut out the section I wanted to modify. Then I made rings with MDF and mounted em with a hot glue gun. Then I stretched fleece over that. It’s the purple part in the pics. My technique was also shitty, you can see all the ripples and air pockets in the glass. I also didn’t put enough fiberglass around the outside edged, making them very weak. I sold my car before I could finish, but I did end up finishing it so i could see what it would turn out like. Ill post the end result when I get the pics.

Re: Fiberglass door panel

I am in the process of starting a custom composite fabrication shop , I have built many show winning cars that have had completly fiberglassed interiors, plus we specalize in fabrication of custom fiberglass enclosures, as well as custom body parts. all parts can be wraped in vinyl, carpet, or can be layed up in carbon fiber, or platnum carbon fiber (aluminized) or can be painted.. I would be interested in discussing what you want in more detail so that an accurate price can be established.. feel free to email me for more information..I have pictures of previous work that i have done that i can email to you at your decression..

I think that your first fiberglass work was probally worse than this, its a learning process. you never get it perfect the first time.

Re: Fiberglass door panel

hey jake, dont let these bastards (im JOKING lol) get you down, like seb said your not gonna get it perfect the first time, nor will it be the second time. BUT do put to good use the helpful tips these gentlemen have put forth! fiberglass may start out looking like shit but in no time with a bit of triming and sometimes a little body filler they quickly turn into eye-popping pieces!

Re: Fiberglass door panel

So here it is painted...Like i said before i sold my car and the kid already fliped it. The 2 holes in the center is where the handle was going to go and You can see the piece hanging off the bottom where i didn't put enough fiberglass. I painted it lime green because i had a galon of it laying around. I didnt sand because the top part of the door was going to cover that, it was just a place to drill into, I didn't go too crazy on the sanding so you will see alot of inperfections, but i really dont care i just wanted to get a feel for what it was going to look like......shit.
