Mounting body over a spaceframe chassis ?
I am currently working on a fuel efficient car project and we have a spaceframe chassis built with a glass fibre body separately created for it. Now I am analyzing the ways of mounting that body over chassis, what ways would be best ?
If a slot could be built inside body then a chassis member can be made to sit in that housing holding the body. It's one way I thought but not much sure if the slot could be built inside body. What other type of strong mountings can be made. Suggestions & Opinions would be really appreciated ! Regards |

Re: Mounting body over a spaceframe chassis ?
A friend of mine did exactly this a few years ago. He used a Formula Ford race car with a custom made one seat fiberglass body on it.
The body should be insulated from the chassis (rubber mounts are best) or else the vibration may crack the fiberglass over time. Take a loot at a typical pick-up truck. Look underneath. You will see the body is bolted to the frame. The bolts go through these rubber biscuits, so the body actually sits on rubber. This rubber allows the frame to shake and vibrate a bit without harming the fiberglass. You may be able to engineer a similar arrangement for your project. |

Re: Mounting body over a spaceframe chassis ?
Thanks for the response. I felt we can get the idea from truck as I saw some mountings patented for trucks infact. The chassis member can be bolted to the rubber mounts fine, how will those rubber biscuits connect with the glass fibre body, that's what's puzzling me

Re: Mounting body over a spaceframe chassis ?
The biggest thing is frame flex vs body flex. If there is a big difference, usually the body will crack. The easiest way to eliminate this is to have some sort of mount that buffers the flex.
