Hi,

I'm recently working on this classic racecar.


It has a nice detailed engine and I decided to put a lot of extras in there to look more realistic. Tried to collect reference photos with little success. The PE parts are really good, contains the heat shield and many other good little pieces. Added a lot of cables, hoses, etc. to the model, scratchbuilded ignition cables, two cylindrical containers, builded the rear springs, etc. I think it looks way better now

Of course I'll do the aluminium stipe, but it will be the last step only, after clearcoat. I'll paint it with some Alclad metal color.

Judging by the photographs, the engine has 4 cylinders. I counted 8 ignition coils on the engine cover. This is not a bug, is it supposed to be like this?

Sebastian - this is normal - what you are seeing is the Toyota dual cam twin plug heads that were used on the 18RG racing engines by TRD of that era.

What you are seeing is the spark plug wires not coils - in those days there was a single coil with a distributor that the coil connected to in the center - then there were spark plug wires going from the distributor cap to the appropriate plug(s) - the plug wires had to be in the correct order at the distributor cap and cylinder or the engine would not run smoothly if at all

The coils are the silver cylindrical bottles angled on the right side of the valve cover with the single blue wire coming out of each of the coils - those high tension wires go to the distributor mounted on the front right side of the engine

Coil over plugs started occurring in cars of the 90's following the application to racing motorcycle engines - now coil over plug is a common thing on most all engines from the mid 90's - the electric distributor and cap setup is a relic of the past - Although BMW used a dual distributor and cap set up on the 1995-01 V12 750il and 850i engines - engines with distributor and cap setup do not require an electronic engine management computer to control the ignition spark

Many manufacturers have used "twin plug" two spark plugs per cylinder set ups - including Porsche in the racing 935's and 956's and 962's. In fact there have been a number of street sports cars that have been produced with twin plug applications - It is to promote flame propagation in the cylinder when the plugs fire to ensure complete burn of the intake charge air and produce more horsepower.
