What you have described is a category known as "special interest automobiles" for a couple of decades. As I recall the CCCA started out by recognizing only a handful of specific makes and models produced between World War I and World War II. Members would nominate additional cars and the standards committee would approve or disapprove them.

The first big exception was made for the Lincoln Continental, when they stretched the eligibility envelope from 1941 to the end of 1948 production.

I haven't paid attention to CCCA for a long time, so perhaps they have added some sort of later-model class, but I doubt they would lump them in with the old '20s through '40s classics.

I do think that you if could take a new Chrysler 300 V6 or heck, a Hyundai Genesis sedan back to 1942, the performance, comfort, assembly and paint quality would make any senior Packard, Rolls-Royce, Duesenberg or Bugatti seem like a gold-plated Jeep. You wouldn't be able to pick up FM stero radio and you'd have to bring your own multi-weight oil with 2010 additives, but I think "Ethyl" gas was up to 90 octane or so...oops, there goes the catalytic converter, replace it with a "test pipe"!

If you're talking about the pre-war 328 THAT was a great sports car. It looked like an upgraded and streamlined Morgan roadster. Performance was good enough that competition versions with special coupe bodies won some major European races in 1939. The BMW team was favored to take Le Mans in 1940, but Germany occupied the whole country of France and the race was canceled.

After the war, Jaguar looked at the world-beating 328 and copied it. The four-cylinder dohc BMW powerplant design was enlarged to six cylinders. The body was made larger and more aerodynamic, with a single large oval grille replacing the two small BMW "kidneys". And by 1949, the XK120 was recognized as the fastest production car in the world at over 130 mph.

The XK engine continued in production for over 40 years, enlarged from 3.4 liters in the mid-'50s and then to 4.2 liters in the mid-'60s. It powered the XK140, XK-150, XK-E, the small S-type and larger Mark 10, 420 sedans. With the additioin of fuel injection, it was last used in the XJ6 series.

To spin this "copycat" tale a bit further, when Chevrolet was planning a sporty car in the early '50s, it looked to the XK120 for a sports car layout to copy. They already had a six-cylinder engine, so it was simple to add three carburetors and dual exhausts. They also copied the cockpit layout, very uncomfortable with a large steering wheel close to the driver's chest and seats so low his legs stretched straight forward on the flat floor. 1953-55 Corvette styling was more like the racing Mercedes 300 SLR, however.

When Zora Arkus-Duntov was engineering the 1963 Sting Ray, he had GM purchase and measure a Maserati 3500 for the interior, resulting in a world-class, comfortable driving position. This new GT Corvette closed the sophistication gap opened by the revolutionary Jaguar E-type.

The Sting Ray's toughest racing competitor was the Shelby Cobra, a Ford V8 engine transplanted into an English AC Ace roadster. And the aluminum Ace body was an almost exact copy of the 1948 Ferrari Barchetta ("little boat")!

I presume you are looking for more mileage from the tow vehicle, not the Lister!

Be sure all tires are pumped to max pressure or even a few pounds more on the tow vehicle and the trailer. My BFG T/A tires are rated 35 PSI max, but I get up to 70,000 miles running at 39.

Set your cruise control 10 mph under the speed you'd like to travel. I find an extra 2 mpg going 60 instead of 70 in my 383 Suburban.

Not enough time for the biggest improvement, but I think a streamlined, enclosed car trailer (think Airstream) would contribute the most economy for your stiuation. A big matched spoiler on the roof of your tow vehicle may help ease air over anything pulled behind you.
