95 Metro 27 MPG ALREADY TUNED. Suggestions? BEtter MPG??

Hi Guys,

Got the 95 tuned up and most other issues taken care of. It runs great but I have checked 4 tanks of gas and found an average of 27 mpg. If I remember right these got aroun 40 when they were new. Am I just expecting too much out of it?( it is an auto). I have put rotor, dist. cap, wires, bosch plugs, cleaned EGR, new air filter. Anything else I need to do tuning wise that will bring up my mpgs? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks for the "blow-by" articles, I have just a little and did not know what was causing it.

Car only has 45,000 miles on it so I have not changed fuel filter.Should I?

Might be a good idea to change the fuel filter. Are you running a 3 cylinder or a 4 cylinder? The 3 cyl is the Metro gas mileage champion. With an automatic transmission, if you do an excess amount of city travel, your fuel economy will be exceptionally crappy, especially if you run the air conditioner. Keep in mind when you hear fuel economy numbers, they are based on a manual transmission if the vehicle can be equipped with one, and then those are even driven very gengerly to make the numbers higher. Still, 27 mpg seems exceptionally low. With only 45,000 miles, I can't think of anything that would make it have such low fuel economy. I believe 95 was the first year the upgraded on board diagnostic system was introduced on Metro models. OBD-2 causes fuel economy to drop because of a richer fuel mix. Adding all these factors together may equal a Metro that only gets 27 mpg... but something does kinda sound fishy.

It has the 4 cylinder, I just hate to put in a feul filter $79, if I will not see somewhat of an improvement in mpg. It is city driven with air now, have not had a chance for a good roadtrip t ocheck it on highway. Thanks for any and all help!

$79. That's quite a price for a fuel filter... You can get one at autopartsgiant.com for as low as $25... Here's what I got when I entered your make/model/year:

FRAM G8008 FUEL FILTER $30.46
BOSCH 71523 FUEL FILTER $24.94
AC DELCO GF800 FILTER, FUEL $26.51

You might want to get a PCV valve and replace it while your at it, if you haven't already...

Take care. Rick

Talking

Thanks for the responses. I mistyped the fuel filter price. It was $20. Thanks for taking time to check this for me. I have changed the pcv valve also. Any other suggestions, even double checked tire pressure he-he!

Re: 95 Metro 27 MPG ALREADY TUNED. Suggestions? BEtter MPG??

After recent tuneup I got about 33 mpg's on the last 15 gallons around town with '91 1.0 , @ 130K. And I don't try to hard. At the price I got this car I'm practically paid to drive it :^)

Could the fuel filter actually affect the car over a couple of mpgs??

Depends on how gunked up it is. If I were you, I'd leave no stone unturned.

Thumbs up Closing this one off!

Well now the story has been told. I just got back from my first road trip with this car and here is the breakdown. I got an average of 31 mpg highway with air going. I got 37 mpg coming back with no air. SO I am writing the 27 in town with air off to experience at this point. Thanks for all the help. I am still going to change fuel filter. I have the same trip next week so we will see if that makes a big difference. Again, thanks for all of your input!

Admins please close this thread for me or send me instructions on how to.
