Transmission Pan Gasket Leak?

I have some transmission fluid towards the back of the pan that has seeped out and covers about the rear third of the pan. My '99 has about 135,000 miles on it. Not dripping and won't do anything about it until it does, but is there anything other than the gasket that could be the source towards the rear of the transmission?

It is kind of hard to tell without getting under there and seeing if it is running down from someplace else. You can get a replacement gasket. I prefer the neoprene type gasket. You could try retorqueing the pan bolts but don't OVER tighten them.

Re: Transmission Pan Gasket Leak?

I dug into my service records and the last time the gasket and filter were changed was 2005. It is the cork gasket. Probably just time to replace it. Ordered Fel Pro TOS18738 and Motorcraft FT130. May just reuse the fluid or just replace the pan drippings depending on how it looks, it has 20,000 miles on it and seems fine at the dipstick.

2005- 74,000 miles filter and limited fluid change (6 qts)- Jiffy Lube Pennzoil Multi Vehicle
2013- 115,000 full fluid flush- Castrol Synthetic

Love this vehicle, owned it since 2006 with some work, but really not that much. It only has 135,000 miles at this time, everything works except the rear vent windows. Paint job has held up great, gets compliments actually. Runs smooth, but mileage is atrocious, probably about 17mpg around town and 19mpg on the highway.

Re: Transmission Pan Gasket Leak?

I had a 1996.
Changing the transmission filter had the issue of the gasket from the old filter sticking in the fitting on the transmission.
Make sure that you get the old gasket out so that the new filter will be able to fit all the way in.
It will be obvious to you when you are doing the job.

Re: Transmission Pan Gasket Leak?

Yes, I had read to keep an eye open for that, we'll see how it goes. Both the Motorcarft FT130 filter and TOS18738 gasket have come in. Both were sold by Amazon and very pleased that the filter (they call it "screen") is the Filtran Made in the USA version and that the gasket was packaged in the flat pack and not folded up like so many others and was also Made in the Good Ole USA. Gonna fly the flag while I do this work, though it might have to be the Canadian one...

Re: Transmission Pan Gasket Leak?

I had the leakage of transmission fluid. There was no drops on floor, but only the wet under suface of the pan. It was coming from stearing pump low pressure line. I changed that now a little seepage from the servo gasket for last many years. I am changing transmission, fluid, gasket every two yeas.I drive about 5-7000 a year. I am pulling along with it.
