Grinding noise while turning

Folks I have a '96 Cutlass Supreme, V6 3.1. Recently when I turn hard to the left I hear a grinding noise coming from the front drivers side... The noise only happens when I make a hard left... A slight left turn the noise does not appear. Turning right no noise is heard...

Any ideas what would cause this?

Thanks!

Re: Grinding noise while turning

Exactly what is a hard turn compared to a normal turn to the left? Is this at low speed or high speed on the hard turn?

Is this a rotational noise? Does it get louder with speed?

So if you are driving down the road on a highway, and you move to the left lane is there a noise....if you move to the right lane, there is no noise?

Re: Grinding noise while turning

I hear the noise when I crank the steering wheel to parallel park... I do not hear it at all while driving straight, I only hear it when I have to make a sharp turn to the left

When driving down the road and move to the left lane, I don't hear the grinding noise at all...

I do not hear the noise while driving only turning left...

Thanks !

Check the dust shield on the LF brake caliper, if it is bent too close to the rotor...

Any recent brake or front end work? Hit any pot holes lately?

Re: Grinding noise while turning

if it does it on the all the way over on the left, does it do it all the way over on the right?

to inspec t it yerself ya gotta get it up. or turn the tires.

if ya made the nose recently and there's a tire rub it should be easy to spot. check the inner tire walls, the fenders, and lowercontrol arms.

is it a rubbing noise or metal to metal? metal to metal get the tire in the air and check the berring, (top and bottom lateral movement)

if this is out of your relm, have a shop, many have free inspections, right before they sell you somthing

Dharris' post reminded me it could be something as simple as a loose mud flap.....if you have them on your car...

Re: Grinding noise while turning

I diagnosed a car that was making a grinding noise once. It turned out that the spring of the strut broke and the broken spring was touching the tire.

Re: Grinding noise while turning

Hope you've discovered the problem and have been able to fix the issue. I recently had this issue on my 92 cutlass and it turned out to be the steering gear was shot and needed to be replaced.

Re: Grinding noise while turning

If you have a "grind" on the wheel it's only 2 culprits either the hub bearing is bad or more likely it's going to be a CV joint problem. Unless you have something stuck in there. You can visually check the CV boot. If it is ripped thats going to be the problem, or if not will soon be. CV joints hate even dust let alone dirt.
