Automotive Forums Fansub Policy

Automotive Forums.com does not endorse or permit the trading of "fansubs" or "scanslations" of licensed series. Linking to sites where downloading of fansubs of licensed series is a bannable offense.

Please do not ask for fansubs of licensed series. If you do not know if a series has been licensed, ask first or check the Encyclopedia at www.animenewsnetwork.com.

Those of you who have traded in fansubs prior to this warning having been posted will not be banned on good faith that you were unaware of the board policy. However, posted links will be erased. Re-posting the links will lead to banning.

Please support the anime industry and the artists by purchasing the DVD's or renting them. Thank you.

A fansub, quite simply, is an episode, OAV, or movie that has been subtitled by fans of the series instead of a licensed distributor.

A scanslation is the manga equivalent; a scanned page that now has English language text added by fans.

Now here's where the sticky part comes in.

A series is generally considered fair game to sub so long as it is not licensed. Good examples of series that have long been fansub favorites are ones like Violinist Hamelyn and Rose of Versailles, series that because of their limited sales potential and age stand little chance of being licensed and so fansubs are the only way to get them. In the olden days, subs were done by fans with the proper VHS equipment and a sub rarely got past 50-100 copies.

However, nowadays fansubbing is done purely on computer and instead of concentrating on series so obscure that only the most hardcore of fans truly appreciate them and the major companies would never license them, the subbers compete to see who can get the latest and greatest series out subbed first. Often sacrificing quality of translation to do so.

As they are subbing hyper-popular big name series, these series get quickly licensed. In fact, many times the series are licensed during their Japanese TV run or even during production. Some big name series are even co-financed by US distributors (for example, Ninja Scroll TV was paid for by Urban Vision, meaning Urban Vision wasn't the licensor, but the series's owner).

Once a series is licensed, by law only the licensed copy is the legal copy and fansubbing of the series should stop after the license is announced (licenses are usually announced at conventions). In past years, it was merely good faith that kept fansubs from continuing after the license had been announced, but now it's no longer the case. Series like Inu Yasha, Initial D, Gundam SEED, and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex have all received high-profile licenses and yet there are still active fansubs out there. Inu Yasha is being subbed because of impatience (130+ episodes and still going in Japan, and the fangirls can't wait for Viz to release them all on TV and DVD here stateside). Initial D is being subbed "in protest of Tokyopop's lousy dub" (which is utter bullshit and I hope they realize will never hold up in court). Gundam SEED and Ghost in the Shell: SAC are simply impatience scenarios, even though both are scheduled for Toonami runs fans can't wait.

As such, many members of the anime press contend that fansubs are past their usefulness and serve as a liability to fandom, rather than a boon. From a legal standpoint, fansubs on AF are limited to those of non-licensed series. If you run across fansubs of a licensed series, personally do not download them and DO NOT link to them here on AF. It will result in your banning. I cannot stress that enough.
