Re: Yamaha YZR500 '83

The fork legs so far.

The stanchions were finished in Alclad chrome with a coat of Klear to protect the finish whilst they were masked of for painting the lower legs.

Lower legs were sprayed Alclad pale burnt metal with other details brush painted silver and gold. Decals are from the MSM Creation set for the bike. They went on fine over a coat of Klear with a little Micro Set / Sol to settle them, finishing with a coat of Alclad semi matt Klear Kote to seal them.

Re: Yamaha YZR500 '83

I've added a bit of detail painting on the bolt heads of the callipers and put the brake hoses in place. I also made a thin mix of black acrylic paint and applied this to the join between the stanchions and lower legs to simulate the seal. Capillary action helped this flow around, and being a thin mix it's easy to clean up if you go wrong.

Looking at the picture I'm thinking I should have added a back to the brake callipers.

Re: Yamaha YZR500 '83

A lot has happened though 30 years of motorcycle racing. We're still using forks but the design has changed quite a lot!
Great work Beakster!

Re: Yamaha YZR500 '83

I've been experimenting making the muffler springs for the exhausts. This one was made with a piece of the wire from the audio cable used earlier in this WIP wrapped around the shaft of a 0.3mm drill bit. I then cut the excess about 1.5mm past the end of the coil and used fine pointed tweezers to bend the end into shape. It wasn't too hard to do and I don't have to stick to the sizes available from TS or MFH.

Re: Yamaha YZR500 '83

After getting so much done fairly quickly work etc has got in the way recently. I have managed to get a bit more done the last few days. I've finished stripping the frame and have filled the inner sides. A bit more work to be done, but it'll be worth it. I'm also getting closer to getting the cowls reading for painting. There's been a bit of work to do priming and filling.

Re: Yamaha YZR500 '83

Hi, sorry I've been away so long, but summer is nearly over so that does mean more time for me to be modelling again!

I've managed to get the frame stripped, filled and painted, along with a bit of work on the rear swing arm.

There's a foam pad that the fuel tank rests on. After getting some foam from Hiroboy, I decided it was too thick and used a some wet and dry paper instead.

Re: Yamaha YZR500 '83

The rear brake assembly on the frame is now almost done. Just a bit of touching up to do and cables to fix in place.

I think it's time for the engine to go in the frame...

Re: Yamaha YZR500 '83

I couldn't resist dry fitting the radiator and exhausts to see how they look.

Re: Yamaha YZR500 '83

I love it when you read about nice clean builds that go together well... That's not how I'd describe today's modelling so far!

Maybe it's me today, a few silly mistakes, but all part of the learning curve. If I wasn't posting here I may have put this model down again!

Anyway, here's where we are so far:

Re: Yamaha YZR500 '83

Just caught up with your build... It's going well!
One thought: Depending on how certain wiring, cables, etc
need to be either "stiffer" (cables, brake lines), or "softer" (electrical etc),
I have begun using lead wire, painted flat Nato Black. Brake lines and clutch
cables are heat-shrunk and stretched 1.2mm TopStudio shrink tube.
Sometimes it's nice to have a wire stay put, and easily bent
into position, and laying naturally, so I use lead wire in that situation...
You can buy it in tiny diameters at fly-tying shops.. 010" 012" 015" 020" 025"
I learned this from a local friend who builds 1/35 Armor vehicles.
Enjoying your work!, Marco

Re: Yamaha YZR500 '83

Thanks for the tip Marco. I have some lead wire but overlooked that idea. I can think of at least one place where is would have been easier to use.

Can anyone suggest any silver/aluminium paints to use for the main frames on bikes? I opted for Alclad as I like the finish (although it's a bit rough on this build - better surface prep needed next time!) The problem I have is it comes off too easily after handling a few times. Should I coat with clear next time, or is there a better paint?

Re: Yamaha YZR500 '83

A small update. I've been spraying the cowlings, they're just drying and then need decaling. For the moment here's how the springs on the exhaust turned out. I'll certainly be making my own again for any future builds.

Re: Yamaha YZR500 '83

Heat staining on those mufflers are superb! I really enjoy your progress!!
Adding extra wiring is always troublesome as you have to get them fitted and to stay in place while adding others. I mostly use fishing line but they can be hard to get bent in sharp curves.
