Question fuel smell 95 mercury villager

I have a 1995 mercury villager and there is a stong fuel smell coming from the side of the van where you put fuel in it and inside of van but cant smell anything under the hood. When you run it in park it's ok but when you put it in drive it stumbles and feels like it's gonna stall and it is even worse when you have the heat or the AC on. When driving you can't fell nothing but when you let up on the throttle it jerks ( like throttle down throttle up).Gas mileage is also very poor. Please help my wife is pregnant and don't like having her in the van because the fuel smell and can't afford another vehicle.

Is the check engine light on???? Have you looked at the gas tank filler tube and vent hose for any leak?? Have all the symptoms been present before the gas smell or since the smell. IS the smell evident when running only??
