Road & Track test the Yugo GV.
This is perhaps my favorite of the Yugo road tests, mostly because R&T compare the Yugo with used cars!
So here are some quotes from the July 1986 issue: "A little car from Yugoslavia showed up here one week, we tested it and it was gone." "... Ted West, had a run in one (R&T, December 1985) and found it basically appealing, with an emphasis on basic." "So how does it go? The experience of our staff reinforced Ted's impressions: It's clearly dated and the finish is a trifle on the rough side, but it does all the necessary things." "With 1900 lb of car to move, it is just a tad quicker than the Sprint all the way up to 90 mph, a speed that the Japanese/American car doesn't quite reach." (a comparison to the Chevy Sprint) "This would be fine at $3990 (which doesn't buy you the freshest used Toyota these days, say a 1980 Corolla SR5 Liftback or a 1982 Tercel Deluxe 2-door sedan) but the car we drove cost $5029 ($620 for air conditioning, $419 for AM/FM stereo/cassette), which aproaches new Sprint or 1984 Tercel territory." "If the Yugo does dig in on U.S. soil, there are some interesting projects coming up, including new styling, an automatic transmission, a supercharger, fuel injection, a convertible and even an all-new sports car." Fuel injection, a convertible and an automatic transmission all came into being, but who know's what ever happened to the rest of those ideas?

I would of been interesting if Yugo really came into america like Hyundai and Kia did
hell DiamlerChrysler or Ford would be competing for it or Fiat could port its models over here under the Yugo name too bad it never happened |
