check engine light inquiry

Hi all,

On my way to work one morning when I started my '97 CR-V, the engine began to stutter, although it did not stall. But while the engine was stuttering, the check engine light started to blink. Then, after a few seconds, the engine ran smoothly with the check engine light stayed on. Now the light is still on and wonder where the problem might be. Someone told me that it may be glitch in some sensor and advised me to disconnect the battery thus re-setting the computer module and the entire system.
I do not want to do this (yet) although it might solve the problem but it doesn't answer the cause of it lighting in the first place. Any similar instances on anyone? Or kindly give some advice.

Thanks.

Re: check engine light inquiry

sounds like you had a misfire. the blinking of the light gives it away. The CEL usually blinks when the cat is in danger of being damaged and that usually hapens because of a misfire.

did you tune up the car recently?

Re: Re: check engine light inquiry

I did a tune up last may, changed all of the plugs, high tension wires, and air filter. The only thing I did not replace was the fuel filter. I don't recall changing this ever. Do you think changing the fuel filter will turn the CEL off?

disconnect battery. if it comes on pull the code yourself or go to autozone and they'll do it for free. no point in guessing what it is.

pull the code.

No, not changing the filer wouldn't affect the CEL. Did you use Bosch plugs on ur tune up?

Re: check engine light inquiry

I did disconnect the battery and let it out for about 30 mins. Then I placed it back on and the CEL did come off! been like this the whole day and no CEL. Think it's just a glitch?
Yes I used Bosch spark plugs. I have to---I first bought NGK spark plugs, same as the exact original ones factory installed, but my gas mileage went from bad to worse, up to 18mpg highway, and worse on the city. When I changed again the plugs I used BOSCH, and now my mileage is around 22 city and 24 highway. With the gas prices nowadays I am religiously tracking down how many miles I go on a full tank. Do you think the BOSCH spark plugs will adversely damage the engine?

Re: check engine light inquiry

Damage no but bosch are know to cause problems like misfires in Hondas. I wouldn't recomend using them. If you wanted a platinum NGK makes a platinum plug that will work too.

Yes that was a misfire for sure. The light blinks when it's an emissions related thing so what happened is when it misfired it sent a bunch of raw fuel out the exhaust and the O2 sensors pick up the extra fuel. Once it stops blinking your problem is over but the light stays on so you can get the code off of it to see what happened. The only problem is you'll get a miss fire code but the computer won't tell you why. If it keeps happening then change your plugs to another brand. if it doesn't happen anymore than just leave it alone.

o2 sensors dont pick up fuel. they do exactly what they are named to do
