Honda Pilot vs Toyota 4Runner

I've narrowed my upcoming SUV down to either the Honda Pilot EX or the Toyota 4Runner V6 SR5 4x4. As reliability and practicality or very high on my wish list. I also might be interested in the Toyota Highlander, but I didn't really feel it stacked up against the Pilot.

They are all priced at just under $40,000 Canadian.

I am hedging towards the Pilot, as it's a bit roomier and slightly better on fuel...but am struggling with the decision.

I'm curious as to the opinions of others, so if you have one please share

I don't have any direct experience with any of the SUVs, but I've been happy with my Accord. So my nod goes to the Honda.

My daughter has owned a 2003 4Runner V6 with 2WD for over a year now. The car is built like a tank - much more substantial than the Honda. She's never had any issues what-so-ever with it. The car is fairly quick, handles well, and gets decent gas mileage for its size. Its build quality is very impressive. Its gets my recommendation.

Re: Honda Pilot vs Toyota 4Runner

My parents had a 98 4runner (leased) and it was awesome, never had any problems for the 2.5 yrs we had it and I know they last forever. Toyota makes an awesome truck. If I ever buy a pickup or a SUV, it will be from Toyota. As far as the different models, it just depends on what options and what size you are looking for...and how much you want to spend....Good luck.

Re: Honda Pilot vs Toyota 4Runner

It honestly depends on your needs, as these are two very different vehicles. The Honda is basically a crossover, using lighter and tighter unibody construction and an electronic AWD system. The 4Runner is built on a ladder frame, referred to as 'body-on-frame' with a driver controlled differential for real 4-wheel-drive.

The Pros of the 4Runner are that it is tough - you can sling this truck through mud and trails and it will come out unscathed. Because it has a 4-Lo setting on the 4x4, you can crawl over rocks and through mud and water without getting stuck. The cons are that it has a rougher ride and carries more weight, so your gas mileage suffers, as does the on-road ride quality and handling. If you are going to be moving people more than fording streams or climbing mountains, the Honda offers better on-road performance, better mileage and more room, still with the basic all-weather capability of an AWD system.

Personally I would recommend the Toyota as the 4Runner is legendary, and if you're getting an SUV you might as well get a real one, otherwise just get a Honda Odyssey.

Re: Honda Pilot vs Toyota 4Runner

I have a 1996 Toyota 4Runner (Limited). It is AMAZING! It's over 10 years old with 200,000 miles and I honestly have had ZERO major problems. I'm almost waiting for the day it breaks down because I feel like it is way too old to be running this well. I love Toyotas.

Gotta be honest, I've never hear that one before.

And the OP is buying the car new. The GC looks better, lasts longer, drives better, and rides better......

EDIT: And my paps had a 96 GC with something like 180,000 miles on it, nothing ever broke....... Or started on fire....... It did get rear ended once...... Didn't even scratch it though yet it totaled the other car

If you only want to have it for 5 years get the Pilot but if you want to have it 10+ years get the 4 runner or the highlander.
