Best Affordable new V6? (manual trans, fun, etc.)

ok, i've driven about half these cars (manual of course) and read copious reviews on those i can't find in lots locally. i'd like some advice if any of you kind souls could find a few minutes to ponder with me.

leaving aside that VW GTI for economic reasons, anyone have an opinion about the new V6's?

i have my eyes on a Nissan 350Z (are those ok in snow?)

... but i may have to settle for a Hyundai Tiburon due to budgetary considerations. I worry about how often people say the Tiburon's transmission makes a burning smell, however.

The V6 Honda Accord felt slow when i drove it.

the Mazda 6 is ok, but it's power band is right at the redline, really, and i'd rather not have to replace the engine : )

i've been told the new V6 cougar is a money pit.

Any other V6's of note? I'm looking at either 2004, or at least something that has a year or two of warranty left on it. and no car heavier than 3300 pounds.

thanks for any advice!

Re: Best Affordable new V6? (manual trans, fun, etc.)

Test-drive the new-for-2005 Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT. It doesn't have a V6, but it has a 2.5-liter turbocharged flat-four engine making 250 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque, about as much as most V6 sedans out there. They're all-wheel-drive, which means that you can use them in just about any weather. And Subaru has a great reputation for reliability, unlike that Hyundai Tiburon. You can get the Legacy 2.5 GT with a 5-speed manual transmission for around $27,000. It's a bit pricey, but it's got a lot of nice features usually found in an entry-level luxury sedan.

Re: Best Affordable new V6? (manual trans, fun, etc.)

thanks everyone. yeah, MunG35 is right. i'm not even sure i can make the payments on a 350Z, and there's the added problem that 350Z's are not known for their good snow handling.

the reason i wanted to avoid the 4 cylinders is that they seem to need stratospheric rpms to achieve any power, and that means engine wear. Can they really make cars now that can survive that kind of constant redlining??

But it looks like one of those screaming puppies is my only choice for an all-weather sporty car.
Dodge RT
Mini Cooper
Acura RSX
etc.

Schecter, you keep pushing Audi, ill keep pushing BMW. The A4 just isnt as good as the 3-series. Every car magazine about road cars agrees, quattro is nice, but the BMW is better (atleast in this class). And you show the video of the RS6, which does not handle like the A4, which is actually within the grasp of this guy.

http://caranddriver.com/article.asp?...&page_number=5

In this comparo, the 330i wins handily over all competition, even the A4 3.0 Quattro (which placed 2nd).

Two cars seem to have been on C&D's top 10 cars since forever, the Honda Accord, and the BMW 3-Series

http://roadandtrack.com/article.asp?...article_id=236

theres a road and track comparo getting similar results (BMW 3-series in 2nd, Audi A4 in 5th).

Generally this is how Audi and BMW have compared for road cars

BMW Audi Winner
3-Series A4 BMW
5-Series A6 BMW (even with Bangle styling)
6-Series None BMW (default)
7-Series A8 Tie (new A8 is very good, old isnt so good)
Z3-4 TT BMW (even with DSG, Audi isnt as good)
M3 S4 Tie (new S4 is very good, old isnt so good)
M5 RS6 Audi (E39 M5 is outdated, new 500bhp
V10 E60 M5 w/ 7 speed SMG coming soon)

This isnt just me, this is almost every magazine out there that has compared these cars.

Re: Best Affordable new V6? (manual trans, fun, etc.)

haha keep tellin ur self this why dont u come race me in the snow uphill than? lets see who will win as i already stated in another thread the m3 has more power but the audi has superior handling and just to let u know the m3 has a pricetag of around 40-50 thousand almost double this guys price range so wut the hell are u thinking? i could give 2 sits wut a magazine says its their preferance. once again i dont think hes lookin for a used car anyway hence both cars are out of the question so why keep pushing it? by the way how old are u?

Re: Best Affordable new V6? (manual trans, fun, etc.)

thanks. what years of Acura RSX are best for the money? I have been shopping monthly payments and it looks like I can't afford a new one.
for the money, Is a Nissan Sentra SE-R from the mid-late 90's a better deal?
and how about the Celica? I had an '89 Celica and it was ok (120 hp, eh...so-so)
What year did the Celicas start to get fast? I have heard they're great now, but i could probably only afford a 90's one. Maybe $3,000 tops.

Re: Best Affordable new V6? (manual trans, fun, etc.)

there's a difference between what you can come up with in a lump sum on the spot to buy a used car from a private individual (they don't "finance" usually! : ) -- and what you can buy new from a dealer. in other words, i could give someone $3000 immediately for a car, but if i buy from a dealer with no money down, i can get away with making monthly payments. get it?
