Any suggestions on a 1999 Subaru Impreza 2.2 (automatic trans)

[edit] 1999 Subaru Impreza 2.2 L Auto Trans

Just looking for some ideas on minor/major modifications I can do to my car to help it run faster.

Also, where around my local area could I go to parts installed and things like that? I'm quite new to the whole car scene, so I'm not sure if I could install parts by myself.

I would trade it in for a manual wrx, or hell even a manual impreza.

Is the car stock?

1999 didn't offer a 2.0 transmission, there was a 2.2 in the L model and a 2.5 in the RS.

Ah, my mistake. It's the AWD 2.2 L model then-- and yes, it's stock.

Yeah, not the greatest car in the world, but it's all I've got seeing as my brother is buying a new car and letting me have this one

In honesty, there's not much worth doing to the 2.2 engine. At most I would suggest exhaust and intake, but beyond that you're pouring money into a car with an obsolete engine.

Rather bank the money you have earmarked for mods and save up to make a down payment on something like an '03 RS in manual.

Re: Any suggestions on a 1999 Subaru Impreza 2.0 (automatic trans)

Beyond the do-it-yourself realm, several companies in north america can swap in other Subaru motors and transmission, including nearly any combination of USDM or JDM turbo WRX or STi motors and 5- and 6-speed transmissions, some including the DCCD features.

In rough estimates, for 1/3 of the price of a new STI, you can have equivalent performance in your car.

On a tighter budget, make friends with RS owners (who will inevitably upgrade their cars) and watch for their take-off parts. Perhaps up to a whole 2.5L motor + 5-speed trans. (My opinion, though, if you're going to bother swapping the motor, just get a WRX motor or better put in.)

Like Ray said, the 2.2L motor is rather anemic, and there's not much you can do about it if you keep it. You can upgrade the suspension and have a very fun to drive, but not very fast car.

Just some ideas to throw around.

(If someone handed me a '99 L today, it would SO be getting an full STI drivetrain swap. )

I bought a '99 Impreza Outback Sport, not so much for performance, but because it was cute. I don't really drive it, but I would like to paint it and jazz it up a bit. Is it at least worth that?

It's a 99 2.2L.. it's a phase II 2.2L. There is almost no difference in power output VS a 2.5L. Surely not any more "anemic" then the same 03 RS you speak of. Yes the auto puts a dampener on things, but surely worth modding!
