Re: Rebuilding Dad's Panoz; LS1 swap

Hour meter and aux power port added.

Hooker swap manifolds painted and installed. Plenty of steering shaft clearance with these.

Rear and suspension all cleaned up and in the chassis. Painted the 3rd member so no more greasy peeling orange. The lower control arms were installed wrong and missing spacers... done correctly now.

Re: Rebuilding Dad's Panoz; LS1 swap

Update:

Wiring a custom car has been quite the project. Never done this kind of work before and learned a lot. Everything is far cleaner, more organized, and serviceable than before. Pedals and hydraulics are also in and adjusted.

Before

During

After

Diff vent cleaned up and installed with new tubing.

Rear end with new axles and brakes all adjusted. Ready for alternator install then driveshaft.

Only wires run down the passenger side and across the top of the radiator. Nothing on the driver side.

MSD 6010 ignition controller harness along with the custom stuff.

Re: Rebuilding Dad's Panoz; LS1 swap

Carbotech XP12/XP10s F/R

Pinion driven alternator all done. Had to figure out how to shim the pulley for alignment and make the power/ground wires.

Cleaned up the driveshaft, greased the u-joints, and installed a new slip yolk to fit the TKO600.

Re: Rebuilding Dad's Panoz; LS1 swap

Had to mount wheels on the rear end and get it on the ground to properly torque the crank balancer. Figured why not see what it weighs so far. Looks like my expectation of around 2500 pounds wet will be pretty accurate.

Re: Rebuilding Dad's Panoz; LS1 swap

Radiator shroud fitted and front bumper support installed.

Picked up some SS pipe to make new side pipes. Easier to go with SS since the Magnaflows and Hooker manifold flanges were already SS. Won't have to coat it now, just wrap for heat.

Re: Rebuilding Dad's Panoz; LS1 swap

Got the new side pipes mostly done and tacked. Need to get some more pipe and put the body side panels in place to finish them and ensure the tips are oriented correctly in the openings. Going to have them tig welded as I don't have the gas/wire to weld stainless. Way more space between the pipes and chassis tub then before. Should result in less heat transfer to the interior.

Re: Rebuilding Dad's Panoz; LS1 swap

Serpentine belt ended up @ 41". According to Eric H. this is plenty of belt wrap and works fine. If it doesn't work I can always install a separate idler.

Catch can and radiator overflow mounted. Catch can has feed lines from each valve cover using OEM PCV system ports and one from the rear of the valley cover. Can also has a return line to a -6 AN fitting added to the passenger side of the pan toward the front. No need to drain the can and no issues with oil dripping down on the side-pipe. Got the MAP sensor hooked up as well; uses a barb on the passenger side of the manifold and a tube connecting the two.

Re: Rebuilding Dad's Panoz; LS1 swap

Radiator overflow hose done, upper radiator hose figured out, and lower almost done pending a tube splice to use half of the OEM Corvette lower.

Hardcore dipstick fabrication. Chrome handle adds a few horses.

Clutch and brake masters bled.

Clutch works. Quartermaster hydraulic throw-out bearing seems to be doing it's job perfectly. Set the pedal stop just past where I can turn the driveshaft by hand.

Side pipes finish welding done by Mike Balf Racecars. Really nice work... too bad most of it will be covered with header wrap.

Re: Rebuilding Dad's Panoz; LS1 swap

Pro 5.0 shifter, custom shifter handle, and Hurst knob... Feels awesome. Far superior to the remote shifter.

Coolant hose splice worked perfectly for the lower. Adapted half an OEM C5 hose.

Looking good! Where did you get the shift handle? I would like to try that.

Thanks!

Re: Rebuilding Dad's Panoz; LS1 swap

Had a local shop make it to my specs. They cut it out of 1/2" plate steel and then rounded the edges and tapered the area near the knob to look like a "normal" Hurst shifter handle. Front edge of the handle to the knob-end base of the threads is 8" long and overall it's 7 1/8" high. Ends up being 8" off the trans tunnel surface due to the slope etc.
