timing cover removal
I have a 1983 380 SL that I am trying to remove front cover. I have separated from block by a bout a 1/4 inch then it is hitting something. Alldata says
NOTE: Cut a strip of sheet metal (approximately 70 x 80 mm), bend it slightly and place it between the oil pump chain and crankshaft sprocket to prevent the chain from staying engaged in the sprocket teeth. To pull off the timing chain cover, lift up the tensioning lever of the oil pump chain. Do not damage the cylinder head gaskets. However I can't get enough slack in chain to do so. Anyone have better instructions? Thanks in advance. |

take and put a wrench and put it on the bolt sprocket and turn it untill you get enough slack in it to get it off. i dono why your not just removing both sprockets? if i'm taking you rite?

I'm confused as to what is hanging up the front cover from sliding forward and exposing the chain and lower spockets. Does the oil pump drive chain connect to the cover, it's in that area that the cover appears to be hung up.

no the timing cover should be just the pan. are you sure you got all bolts out and theres one not hiding? sometimes i tell people to go to autzone.com it will show you the whole picture or about. if you cant find it in location click on diagram.

from what i remember the SL engines had a different oil pan that required you to remove the pan in order to remove the front timing cover.
