1998 Geo Tracker - need timing gear information.

This Geo has a timing belt not a chain, 1.6 engine. On the cam sprocket it has a "E" and "I", which one do i align at the top?

On the crank sprocket, I tried aligning it up at the 12 o'clock position but when i go to check #1 cylinder, the piston is all the way down, am i missing something here, i thought it was suppose to be TDC?, when i go to align #1 at TDC, the timing mark is at 9:00 o'clock position, is this the way it is suppose to be?, do i still put the timing mark on the 12:00 position?.

I bought a book but it only discribe the chain.

and last, where on the distributor do i put the rotor cap?

Thank you.

Re: 1998 Geo Tracker - need timing gear information.

my buddy has a 95 1.6 and his timing belt broke, replaced the timing belt, we set it at 12:00 - 12:00, cam and crank, and of course the distributer on #1 thats the way its supposed to be. so they say, acourding to the haynes book. the distributer was pointing at #1 cyl. it would not run, i kept notching the distributer a tooth clockwise at a time and finally it fired up! but, the distributer was on #4 cyl? go figure? it ran ok but kind of rough so we changed the oil and put new plugs in it and now THERES NO SPARK!!!!!!
i dont think i like trackers to much : (

tiso, just try to mess around with the timing, im not sure how we got that thing going the first time ,but we did it by the book, and it did not work, there the crazyiest engines i have ever had the displeasure to work on
