Re: is car servicing important
one thing you want to do is keep your oil changed at 2500-3000 mls. and if your loosing gas milage your plugs, air filter, wires, gas filter even keep an eye on tire pressure don't go by what it sais on tire go by what the car sais to run them at that's for milage and wear and tear also and put some seafoam in it about once a moth. i'm sure others on here will tell you more.

Re: is car servicing important
Refer to the owner's manual for this info...use the "severe" service interval because that's about what everyone's driving habits fall into categorically. For newer vehicles, the old 3,000-mile oil change interval is overkill and primarily for the benefit of the shops that do them.
One thing I will debate are the so-called "filled for life" fluids. I can't see how any carmaker has engineered something so well that a fluid is good enough to last the whole life of a vehicle. Lubes breakdown, oxidize, become laden with particulates, fine metal shavings, etc. Replacing with fresh fluid keeps these contaminant levels down and replenishes the fluid's protective properties. Case in point: 2003-up Ford Explorer/Mercury Mountaineers have sealed transmissions...no drain and no fluid level dipstick. These have had bad reputations for transmission failures. My gut would say 50k miles for transmissions, 100k for differentials and transfer cases, sooner if the vehicle is used for towing regularly. Hope this helps!

Re: is car servicing important
The owner's manual has service intervals. They are set up for two things: 1) to be VERY conservative so they cover their a$$es when it comes to warranty repairs, and 2) even MORE conservative to make you think you have to spend money at the dealer for service.
There is no set "service" time. Oil changes can be anywhere from 2000-15,000 depending on the vehicle, its use, and the oil you use. Tire rotation is heavily dependent on FWD/RWD/4WD as well as the type of tire and how you use it. Air filters might need to be changed every 2000 or every 100,000 depending on how you use it. Ask some more specific questions

Re: is car servicing important
Yes servicing is important and you want to follow the manufacturers handbook to keep your motor from dying on you. Your time is better spent looking for a good garage than pondering whether to service or not.
