I feel ur pain wombat, we've got a 70 roadrunner in our garage with a 383 magnum + pistol grip manual shifter... the poor car's been sitin' in there for 20 some od yrs cuz my dad's been well just to lazy to fix it up and I want more than ne thing in the world for it to be fixed... meep meep! oh and wildcat, what's with all the mopar hate man? seems like every thread I look at ur dissing mopars and HEMI's. I guess it's all good, I mean to each his own, but pls try and lay off the flames?

requote from butch 69 when your saying the hemi was not that great, makes me laugh, believe me i grew up in that era, a hemi dominated every facit of automotive racing, the factory said 425 horsepower and everybody that had one or raced against one knew better, a more realistic figure would be 600 horses off the showroom floor. i agree the LS-6 454 from the showroom would be a good run, but if the hemi ran automatic it was over and the hemi could be tweaked like no other. the 440 wedge was also very bad. chrysler products totally dominated the dragstrip from 63 to 70 . the record books don't lie!!

A agree roadrunners are the best. My dad had one when he was young, but the only thing he kept from it was the engine. It was a 1969 440 6-pack and he said he wished he would have kept it because they only made 350 of that model.

i like the roadrunners the 440 6 was pretty hard to beat from the factory, but there are some awsome buicks out there, although the hemis had more pure hp, they wernt running the 4.10 gear in it so they were slow in the 1/4 mile

how come no one has mentioned the 68 hurst hemi dart yet? 10.50s from the factory, to bad there were only 14 made,

another was a ford thunderbolt that did 11s

Wow, a lot of misinformation about hp of various musclecar engines. I am a musclecar enthusiast and not particularly brand loyal to just one marque. I recently developed a list of musclecars that I would be interested in owning and it included cars from every manufacturer. To me, blindly insisting that any one car is head and shoulders above the rest is less than informed at best.
Any 1/4 mi tests are approximations of a cars performance only as comparing 1/4 mi times fails to take into consideration the many factors affecting performance. Factors such as; transmission choice; gear ration; state of tune; tires; drivers; temperature; elevation; humidity and a thousand other things.
I offer the following list from Musclecar Magazine with the top power producers in order;

- #1 Corvette 427 L-88 - 480hp
- #2 Mopar 426 Street Hemi - 470hp
- #3 Chevelle 454 LS-6 - 450hp
- #4 Oldsmobile 455 W-30 - 440hp
- #5 Corvette 427 tri-power - 435hp
- #6 Mopar 440 6 pack - 430hp
- #7 Ford 427 dual quad - 425hp
- #8 tie; Buick 455 Stage 1; Ford Boss 429 - 420hp
- #9 tie; Mopar 440 Magnum; Ford 428CJ - 410hp
- #10 Chevrolet 396 L-78 - 400hp

Now, please keep in mind that this isn't my list and I would be the first to admit that if you were to dyno all these motors you wouldn't get the exact figures noted above, but I do believe that they are close and more importantly that any car equipped with any of these motors could win a drag race on a given day considering the variables mentioned above.
That having been said, some of the motors had more untapped power potential (such as the L-88, Hemi, Boss 429) and some were closer to the top of thier game in stock form (such as the 428CJ, Olds W-30, etc.)

I'm proud to own a 440 6-Pack Super Bee and I was equally proud to own a '70 442 W-30 and I'd have been happy having a 428CJ Mustang or a Stage 1 Buick. Car shows and magazine articles are a lot more fun if you can appreciate more than just what you happen to own.

The "official" factory rating is 375 hp, but it actually made more.

Dave, I have that same article from "Musclecars" magazine, written by Roger Huntington, a long-time auto journalist.

The list of actual horsepower does seem to be quite accurate. You just could not trust the factory ratings... for instance, the Ford 390 and 428 both rated at 335 hp? I don't think so!

The 425-hp rating for the Hemi was also a joke!

I have an issue of "Drag Racing" magazine from June, 1969 and they test a '69 440-6 bbl Road Runner.
Weighing in at 3,765 lbs, with an outside air temperature of 36 degree and with Ronnie Sox driving a 1/4 mile of 12.98 secs @ 111.66 mph was recorded. This was at Cecil County Drag-O-Way.

One of the best made-for-drag-racing cars ever built!

Are you sure you couldn't get a Dana 60 rear with 4.10s in a Hemi car? I'm willing to bet you could.

Yes, you definitely could get the Hemi with Dana 60 (9 and 3/4" rear) and 4.10 gears. It was called the Super Track Pack option.

Yes, there were around 80 Hemi Darts and 80 Barracudas built.

The Hemi was only "king" on the street if you had Ronnie Sox, Dick Landy or Maurice Petty to keep the damn thing in tune! They were high-strung, shaky-idling, thirsty, temperamental thoroughbreds that needed adjustment every few hundred miles.

The 440 gave you just as much torque. And that's what wins drag races. Horsepower is more about top end, like NASCAR superspeedways.
