How to provide motor assist to engine?

how can we connect two shafts rotating at different speeds and transmit the sum of there power to a third shaft?is there something called reverse differential gears where inputs are given at wheels and output taken at transmission shaft?wat are the methods used in "battery -motor assist the engine" in parallel hybrids in there transmission to achieve the same?
