Transmission pan gasket/leak

I need to replace the transmission filter and pan gasket in my 99 1500 4X4. I have heard from some to just use a "permatex" like silicone gasket maker, but I'm concerned that the silicone will harm the valve body if it gets in there. I picked up a filter and gasket kit, that comes with the rubber gasket, but I'm wondering if I should also use a silicone or just use the rubber gasket. I've never done this before so any help/suggestions would be appreciated. I've got to stop this leak. I have the 14 bolt pan.

I would just buy the tranny pan gasket and use that. I wouldnt mess around making one.

This falls under the category of "avoid the cheap Fix"
Spend the extra money for the right gasket to not only fix it correctly but to also have that extra piece of mind.

i usually added 3M weatherstripping compound to the gasket before i installed it. it helped keep the gasket in place. yeah, i might get flamed for it, but i haven't had a problem yet and have been using it for 11 years. love the stuff. the only problem is, when ya need to take the pan off again to do another filter change, it's stuck REAL good. just my $.02

Put the pan gasket on dry with no RTV silicone.You gaurenteed a leak if you do not put on dry.Some came with a reusable gasket and I have seen this twice

One more thing,stay away from the black pan gaskets.The black ones from the filter kits are a PITA to straighten out.The cork one is better.Another thing to check too,The bottom line towards the radatior.There is a nylon checkball in that line and there is one thing to do with that checkball:Get rid of it!The problem with that checkball is that it melts and plugs the line right up.The transmission will burn up if you do not remove the checkball.Take a long #2 phillips screwdriver or drill it out.The line is the rubber hose part,you need a 3/4'' and 7/8'' wrench and the special,white plastic tool for gas lines

cork is better? I would buy a little higher quality than that.

The cork ones are better.My father stocks them,orders them from a transmission parts place called D&E.The black pan gaskets that come with the filter kits are mangled up in the box and are a pain in the butt to straighten out.Chrysler came out with the reusable pan gasket probally in 2000.

Im not saying theones that come with the filters are better, cause they arent. Im pretty sure the one i got when i changed my fluids on my 99 was rubber.

Use the black reusable mopar gasket it is worth the extra money . Cork is for wine bottles basically obsolete in the auto industry .
