looking for a 2 grand car to improve as i go..

I have a crapped out old 90 jetta, and i'm fed up and i'm looking to buy a car for hopefully below 2 grand that will run well, but has room for some improvement. not performance-wise, though. just as i go and make more money i can spend a little here and a little there and in the end, turn out with a nice looking/functioning car. any help would be appreciated. nothing really sporty. i also like euro cars. reliability is also important.
thanks a lot..
dale

Hondas are pretty reliable, plus a wide market of after market parts.
