1994 Pontiac Bonneville Problems! Got Codes Pulled..help!
I have a 1994 pontiac Bonneville with a 3800 engine, 6 cyl...Recently it has started to give me problems with cranking It just turns and turns but does not crank up..the first time it did it I was thinking it was low in gas..but it is full now and it does it just on ocassions...
it mostly cranks good but every now and then i go out and it won't start out of the blue...mostly it happens when i have just gotten out of it then 30 minutes or so later it won't crank..but it does not do this all the time..today it happened but before this it has driven good for about a week with no problems...so I am guessing the problems only happen after it has been warmed.... but i have cranked it after it has been warmed so it happens on occasion after being just driven within the previous hour or so....I would appreciate any help with this...thanks Last edited by bridget36907; 01-16-2004 at 05:39 AM. |

I have a 92' and have had all kinds of problems. But, I still like the car. From the sounds of it, it looks like your starter might be going. If you get stuck in a parking spot after a while just hit the starter underneth the car and it should start, but replace the starter when you get a chance. You can remove the starter and have it checked.

It actually turns over andover and the starter is engaging..just when it gets warm mostly it won't crank until it sits about 30 minutes....some have said it was the ignition module, crank sensor, etc
thanks |

I have to say a couple things. First never hit your starter with anything. IF it has permanent magnets, the starter will be destroyed and have to be replaced.
About the no start, it sounds like what would happen on the older chevys. Its called heat soak. They put the starter solenoid on the starter which would be right next to the exhaust manifold. When hot, the solenoid would not work. The solution would be either cover the starter assembly with a heat tape, or get a Ford style remote solenoid. This of course may not be the problem. |

Re: 1994 Pontiac Bonneville Problems!!!
My 94 is doing the same thing. I am on the road every night for about 6 hours for work, and when I get home and shut the car off, if I try to go anywhere within about an hour it crank and cranks and has a heck of a time starting.

Bridget (95neongirl - maybe??) 70chevelle84 might be onto something with the heatsoak, I would also try to eliminate other factors as well. The more I talk to people, and read info on the early Pontiacs and Olds they had a big problem with intermittants, and stalling. I'm going through the same thing right now with my 94 SSEi. I have replaced damn near everything and have attacked the car with my scanner and digital volt meter. I think I may know you, so I'll discount you have checked for codes (if i'm wrong, sorry). I have seen fix's for these by just cleaning (thoroughly) the battery connections on both ends, engine grounds, and the positive feed that goes up in-between the two fuse blocks on the firewall (underhood). Also make sure that your key is clean (diode-chip) with alcohol. Next time it wont start, see if you have power getting to the starter solenoid and try to notice if the service engine soon light comes on when you turn the key to the "On" position (not start)- like it's supposed to, is it flickering while the gages are sweeping? Or does it not come on at all?

Re: 1994 Pontiac Bonneville Problems!!!
I think that the starter is engaging..it cranks over and over but will not actually start up until it sits for a while sometimes it occurs after only 20 minutes of driving......i had it tested and the first test he cleared them all without telling me what they were he said there were so many..that they were probably old and that there were a lot of evap codes..he asked had i put gas in the car with it running etc...he told me to come back when it did it again..i did and these were the codes
740 torque Converter (traction control?) 361 EST line not toggling 321 no 18X ignition pulse 101 Mass Air Flow Failure can anyone diagnose

Re: 1994 Pontiac Bonneville Problems!!!
Welcome to AF, this is a dead 7 year old thread, in the future start a new thread, the how to can be found at autozone.com, repair guides. A scanner will show cranking rpms, in none suspect the sensor , ign. module or wiring, does the car start?
