1988 Olds "88" Royale
Hey there everyone, my fiance has a 198 Olds "88" Royale, and everything seems good except that the throttle sticks and keeps the engine revving. Which then causes us to have to turn the car off, and let it cool down because it over heats. Anyone has any idea how to fix this problem? Any help would be appreciated

Disconnect the throttle linkage from the throttle body see if the throttle body is binding.

Agree with Max.......is the accelerator or cruise cable keeping it open? If not, then it's binding in the bore........maybe cleaning the bore and edge of the plate, will allow the plate to close.....
However, if the plate is fully closing, then you could either have a vac leak or an IAC problem..... Have you checked for codes? You can get flash codes from this vehicle.... |

That's a threepeet on checking the throttle body. I remember cleaning the carbon out of those for sticking throttle plates.

Re: 1988 Olds "88" Royale
Okay, so made a new discovery today, It would rev up whenever we would come to a full stop, or put the car into park. Would I still have to do what was suggested? I appreciate the feedback.. I've only worked on my 93 Legend, and 96 Maxima so I'm not familiar with older cars, nor this problem.

Yes, and I would also pull the IAC valve out of the throttle body and clean the pintle and passageway...
