Rauh-Welt 964 Porsche - Hobby Design

A year or so ago, I saw a RWB Porsche at the Formula D car show and fell in love. I never really cared much for Porsches before that, so I guess it was like my gateway drug because, now I want a real Porsche.. some day...

In the meantime, I have this Hobby Design conversion kit to build. It'll be my first conversion, so hopefully it works out well. We'll see..

Re: Rauh-Welt 964 Porsche - Hobby Design

This is my first conversion kit that requires sawing off body panels to fit replacement parts. I'll be honest here, i'm kinda just "winging it". I already can see that i'll have to do some repairs/filling and more cutting to make things fit right. It's kind of a pain, to be honest. I guess i've been spoiled by the way modern model manufacturers make everything so easy.

Here it is before anything has been done.

..and now, the side panels.

The front bumper.

Sawing off the fender, just like Nakai! Unfortunately, I still have 3 more fenders to go.. and the rear bumper, and the engine cover/wing. Not a bad start though!

Thanks. It's coming along. Rear bumper and rear right fender.

Cutting the fenders without guides and getting everything lined up properly is a little more difficult than I thought it would be, but i'm confident that it'll be worth it in the end.

Re: Rauh-Welt 964 Porsche - Hobby Design

I started gluing on the body panels. Man.. this conversion kit kinda sucks. I mean, the details are nice, but the fit is horrible. It's going to take A LOT of work to make the parts connect smoothly. I had to break some bits off to get the angles right, to be filled in with putty or something. It's possible it was made for a different Porsche kit than i'm using, or maybe I didn't cut the base model in the right spots.. I dunno.

Anyway, I think it'll look ok in the end, it's just going to take more work to get there than I wanted.

I've always hade severe trouble with putty work on curved areas like on those wide body Porsches, people mostly seem to sort it out though so get the putty and paper out and get to work ;-) Can be a great build if you put some effort in!

Yeah, I got out my apoxie sculpt last night and filled in all the gaps. Next step is to sand that smooth, then fine tune the gaps with regular filler putty. It's coming along..

I remember when fujimi and aoshima made resin bumpers and included them in their kits. It was the same thing the resin shrunk and they were typically 2-3mm too small. What really worked for me was using styrene inbetween because it made the strongest bond IMO. I also think you might be using the wrong kit but not 100% sure. But its coming along nicely keep it up.

Re: Rauh-Welt 964 Porsche - Hobby Design

Thanks.. I chose this specific kit because it was recommended on a site that sold this conversion. I do think the regular 964 would've been better in retrospect due to it's narrower body, but oh well.

So this is where she stands. Putty - sand - prime - see mistakes - putty - sand - prime..etc.

I admire your determination and I regret the price of this transkit, compared to the C1 models full-body TK...

Yeah, I recently got the 993 C1 kit and it's pretty nice, and.. well.. man, I really wish the 964 version would've been available, but a challenge is always fun.
