'65 Rambler Classic 770
I got a 1965 AMC rambler classic 770 with a 232 v6 in it... its not even enough power to spin the tires one rotation... How big of an engine would i be able to fit in its place ?? Whatever engine you suggested what kind of vehicle could i find one in? or where would i be able to get one?? And also.. are there any websites that sell parts for this car, such as a transmission or something of sorts?? Thanks for the help

Re: '65 Rambler Classic 770
Should be an inline 6, not a V6.
All the AMC V8's will bolt up, although its easier if you have an auto trans. Go for am AMC 401, but they are harder to find. A 390 is the next best choice. If the trans is bad, and you do not care about originality, you can do a custom swap and install a small block Chevy and auto trans. It's a bit more trouble to install, but the parts are much cheaper and more available. I have come across several people who have done just that to AMC Gremlins. |

sorry about that... it is and inline 6... is it hard to find a 401 or 390 with a useable transmission in junkyards? The reverse on mine does not work properly... how much would it cost all together would you estimate for engine and trans. swap?

Re: '65 Rambler Classic 770
a 258 I6 would bolt right in, Performance parts are somewhat hard to find, but built up a little they are one hell of a motor. Really common also. They can definatly spin a tire, this is mine with stock 258 2bbl with nothing done to it performance wise, burnout pics: http://www.geocities.com/tsc_kustomz/index.htm

Re: '65 Rambler Classic 770
i have a 65 rambler classic 770 with the 287 and a 3-speed with overdrive and have no problems with smoking the tires. granit the 287, w/ 198 hp is only one of the 2 v-8's amc offered in 65-66, the other being the 327 w/250 or 270 hp, still gets the job done. if you need any other info feel free to ask i have the chilton for the 1959-66 rambler and american, i also have an original owners manual for the 65 rambler classic 770.
