Replacing Fuel Sending Unit, advice/questions

So the check engine light has been on in my car for a while now, and I took it down to the dealership today to take a look at it. They did a smoke test and found out that there’s a leak in the fuel sending unit and gave me an estimate of about $1000 (with labor costs included) to get it replaced.

I’m not really a car guy, but I know dealerships tend to charge up the ass for repairs and replacements of things sometimes so I just had a few questions and wanted some advice if possible.

My questions are:

Is this a fair price for its replacement with labor costs included?
Is it possible to just have this fixed, or does it really need to be replaced entirely?
If it can be fixed, what might the cost estimate be and can I just take it to a regular mechanic shop to do this at a cheaper price?
Do you think a mechanic shop would be cheaper to go to if it needs to be replaced, or should I just stick with the dealership?

My car is 2011 Hyundai Sonata SE.

Thank you for your help in advance!

Re: Replacing Fuel Sending Unit, advice/questions

Go to any auto parts store and have them pull the code for the light. Post the number here. The fuel sending unit controls the fuel gauge. It's part of the fuel pump inside the gas tank. Never heard of a smoke test for fuel sending unit.
