$1700 to much for this repair?
Broken valve spring, which caused the valve to hit the piston which caused timing to jump. They replaced the spring, pushrod, timing chain/gears & water pump. They also had to take one head off. Does $1700 sound about right for this repair? $1200 labor and $500 parts.

actually yes it does sound right....it is a labor intensive job....and depending on garage rates and parts....1700 is about right
