CD Player

I have 2002 xlt with the 5 cd player, 3 of which are stuck in there and it won't work. Ford wants $800 to fix!!!! I could buy 3 new ones for that!!

Anyone have any ideas how to fix? (and remember I am totally clueless about cars or these things!)

Hello Clueless: I'im assuming you want the CD player to eject the discs. To do this turn the power on at the CD player. Make sure the CD player is turned on. Then....disrupt the power supply either by pulling the CD fuse or by disconnecting the battery terminal. Then put the fuse back or replace the battery terminal. Doing this should eject one of the discs. You might have to do this procedure three times, once for each disc. Make sure the key is in the accessory or run mode and the CD player is getting current before you do this.

Thanks Dave!! Now where do I find this CD fuse? Will this fix the player itself or just remove the cds? thank you!!

You'll find the fuse in the left hand part of the dash underneath. There will be a little box with a cover on it showing which fuse controls what. This may eject the CDs but don't think it will fix the player.

Fixing them may cost more than it's worth. There seems to be an abundance of newer car radios on E-Bay - with extremely low prices on some. I had a cassette player in my Rodeo that went bad, so I bought a practically new identical one on E-Bay for $22 including shipping. It worked great for as long as I owned the vehicle.
My point is that for $22 I couldn't ever get a repairman who understands those things to even clear off his bench for that $. And then to actually fix it? $$$$$.
Makes more sense to buy a used one (or two or three if needed) and be ahead of the game.

Thank you Tom, I am going to bid on that one. Are the escape OEM compatible with explorer of same year. The one you noted above is a 2004 escape. Mine is 2002. So the year doesn't matter correct? It is so hard to find any info. I went to Ford site and they only have info for 2004 and later.

Clue, no problem - glad to help some.

As for install tips on these.....I've never done it on my Ford. But if it's anything like other cars you simply have to carefully pop off the bezel around the radio. (I'd look outside at mine but it's dark & cold outside here in Maine) These usually just snap in place with no screws on newer cars. The bezel might be quite big and have a couple of dash control wiring connectors to separate, but it shouldn't be difficult or require highly special tools. With the bezel off you should be able to see how the radio is fastened in there. Maybe an 8 mm headed screw or two. Possibly a bracket holding it in. Anyway, get that radio loose and carefully disconnect the wiring connectors and the antenna cable (plugs right in?) You should have the radio CD player in your hand. To replace it, just reverse the order of removal steps.

Your next question about whether a 2004 will fit a 2002. What does the picture looks like compared to yours? If they aren't identical then remove yours first and get the model number off the side/back of it. Then send the E-Bay seller a question about what his model number is. Maybe ask for a couple pictures of the back connectors and some dimensions, etc.
If no match, then watch E-Bay for a week, one might show up. This car is common, the CD player should be too. Also try the 'Want It Now' feature on E-Bay by being descriptive of exactly what you want with models numbers, etc.. You might get a response in a couple of days.

Thank you Tom. I wasn't able to get mine out this week so I lost out on the 2004. There are 2 on ebay now for 99-2003 fords. The pictures are the same from the same seller but it doesn't show the 2 holes on each side. I emailed him and he said it does have but the pictures clearly don't reflect that and has some metal attachment on bottom which as you know I am clueless about. Any thoughts?

Wow - that CD player sold for more than I would have imagined.
But it does look just like the one in my '04.
The seller may be right about it being common to many models. If so, use that to your advantage and confirm what yours looks like in the back. Then do E-Bay searches for specific Ford models and you may stumble across one at a real good price. What about the Mazda Tribute? It's the same as our Fords. Might have the same radio? The good news is that the radio in that auction you sent seems to be quite simple to unplug and plug in - nothing special. Just a bracket holding it in place. Hopefully you won't have to be a contortionist to reach behind it to get the fasteners loose. Good luck. Tom

Thanks Tom. They are all selling for that much! I ordered one of those ford thingys, so when I receive, I'll remove player so I can confirm. I asked one seller and he said his would fit if i had two wires not 3. AS IF, I'd even have a clue! But I'll also try the tribute as you suggest. Thank you!
