I sanded a "dent" into my new civic! Can I fix?
Just got my new 08 civic si black.
I somehow got a nasty rock chip by the door handle. I touched it up, sanded down with very wet 2000 grit and buffed with some scratch x. I was up close to the car as I did this. The chip blends perfectly, only problem. When I stepped back I was sad since I seem to have sanded a small dent into the cars clear coat. At the right angle this looks rather bad... about the size of a football shaped pea appears to be a dent. Yet its just my shit sand job, not a dent. Since the scratch is gone can I just start layering clear coat touch up on it, then sanding - more carefully this time! As in, clear coat the entire little “dent” and then sand, and then rework as necessary? Or am I ******? Should I just give up and leave it with it matching well, but with a dent in the clear? Thanks for all the help! Last edited by LearnAutoBody; 06-23-2008 at 07:19 AM. Reason: Improper Language |

You could just find a little tiny brush and try to fill it with the clear. . . Worse comes to worse if it doesn't look good you could just sand it back off!

Re: I sanded a "dent" into my new civic! Can I fix?
well, i had my clear coat tested via an electronic tester. I then sanded the surrounding area and buffed it up. It it is still not perfect so i may try to put clear on it. But, I did get 50% of the "visual dent" out of the car.
- aw hell I'll just slap a giant misspelled "vtech" [sic] sticker on it! -just kidding i sanded 2 1/100's of a mill of clear off. I could have taken it further and totally eliminated the problem but I dont want my clear to fail in a few years. |

If it is a dent, you can just do the whole process, grind off the paint where the dent is, do the putty work, glaze, then DA the scratch marks and then seal it, prime it, paint it, then clearcoat, along with more sanding if necessary, and buff. The whole process, it shouldn't take but maybe a couple hours, but just blend in the paint, you dont have to paint it all over again. Hope this helps.

the clear shouldnt be thick enough to make a noticable 'dent' in it... you may have damaged the metal under it by sanding too hard... try paintless dent removal and skip the whole body shop. its cheaper and you dont have filler on your car.
