update:...the Z now has about 312k, still going strong; daughter informed me yesterday that the AC is not blowing cold anymore...guess it is time to take it in for its 100k checkup...kinda like a baby...have to "burp" it from time to time...have pretty much retired this one as a "work" truck...still use it when I need to put a trailer in a difficult spot. The '07 I put in its place is only a 2 wheel drive (HUGE mistake), 2500HD 6.0 with only single wheel pull...gas HAWG (yep, meant to spell it that way)...13 to 14 combined mileage (this one isn't going to stay around as long as the Z)...the one thing I like about the '07 is the "manual shift" of the automatic tranny...really helps in hills with a loaded trailer...do NOT care for the "tow/haul" mode on this tranny...tries to imitate a jake brake and causes the engine to over-rev when going downhill with a load...several times the tac has went past 6k trying to hold a load back; therefore, I rarely use "tow/haul", most frequently I use the manual mode on the tranny. |

Re: how many miles on orig motor and trans
I retired my '90 Suburban's original 350 at 370,000 mostly dino oil miles to make room for a 383. The 700R4 trannies are a weaker spot, you save on gas but pay it right back for rebuilds. My original trans only made it to 85,000 miles and I don't drive that hard. My best beefed rebuilt went 215,000 miles.

well, the old girl finally broke....transmission turned loose...does anyone know if the 6L90E can be adapted to the 5.3 engine...the engine is beginning to drop oil pressure from worn mains and am considering a heart/lung transplant from a later model...would like to upgrade to the 6 speed manumatic as in my '07...realize it would probably entail a computer swap also...but think I can do the swap for much less coin than a new truck. |

Re: how many miles on orig motor and trans
Forgot to mention, the '90 Suburban is now at 468,000 miles, 98,000 on the "new" 383 with World heads, Edelbrock TBI intake and shorty header, Crane RV cam and 3" into 26" Gibson muffler into 4" exhaust into 5" tip. Highway mileage on 87 octane is 15-17 mpg depending on speed and load.

Re: how many miles on orig motor and trans
I worked for a company that had a '92 2500 as sort of a bulletproof beater workhorse type truck. It was just known as "the red pickup". They bought it brand new in 1992 with three miles on it. It towed many trailers, transported heavy payloads, and was driven by just about every member of staff with a valid drivers licences (and rumor has it, a few without). When I started there, the odometer read somewhere around 375,000. That summer the odometer reached 388,000 and stopped working. The truck stayed alive for the rest of that season, as well as the following season. Each season the truck easily did 40,000 miles, maybe more. I was told that a few years before my arrival, the engine (a 350 TBI) had been rebuilt. The maintenance was always done right on time, and the transmission (automatic with overdrive) didn't act up once. Then in it's last week on the road, the engine started to lose power, started misfiring regularly, started smoking at random unpredictable times, overheating, then finally hucked a connecting rod right through the crankcase. It was a sad day, but the red pickup really lead a massively productive life. Her death was sad, but noble.

Re: how many miles on orig motor and trans
Thought it would be fun to revive the old thread and see how many of the old guys that used to be on here still might have their truck. I still have the 2000 Silverado, though highly beat up after two kids driving it. 244,000 on it and still going.

the parts I was going to buy for my old GM vehicles from GM dealership are made in china and even have the same part number but the part is not made that same. I purchased a connector for my 96 Chevrolet and it had the same part # but the connector had the wrong key so I could not use it brought it back .. then the coolant radiator pressure cap OEM from factory when built 15psi now they say 18psi is the part for my old GM .. this company is not to my approval.. |
