Twin Turbo V-8 3000gt in the works

So my parents bought a '94 VR-4 as their "We're over 45 and deserve a sport's car" car. Dad wanted something AWD, mom wanted something attractive, and I wanted a VR-4. We're all happy. So we picked up one with a good bit of mods including but not limited to twin GT35's (15g), 550cc injectors, upgraded fuel pump, centerforce clutch, K&N intake, yada yada. Supposed to be pushing in the neighborhood of 425 according to our mechanic expert who's done all the work for it. So Dad gets it in his head, after reading the Montero 3.5L V6 swap that he wants to do something better.

Released in Japan, Korea, and some South American countries was a car known, at least in Japan, as the Proudia. One of the versions holds a 4.5L V8 which is good for 300hp, no turbos. The compression is 10:1 so it can handle turbos. It weighs just 22lbs more than the 6g72 and is 2 inches longer. Dad's looking to in the next 2 years have this thing inside the VR-4 with both turbos. Trying to figure out shipping issues from Japan to get the front half of one of these 4.5L bad boys over here. What do you guys think? We're giving thought to inviting 3SX in on the deal to get their expertise... and parts.

So these was this rich kid that swore up and down that his dad had an AWD v8 TT 3000GT. He said that his dad spend like $100,000 on it to have it custom done, but I never believed him. The weird thing was the kid was completely down to earth about everything else in his life. He wasn't one to talk to shit at all. he had a very modified AWD DSM, he said the mods that were done, but didn't talk shit about it. He had pictures of this 3000GT, a bunch of porches and random other cars his dad owned. This makes me wonder.

not saying it wouldnt be cool as all hell...but for the money that a custom job like that is gonna cost, you can get tons of horses out of the stock powerplant. Not to mention other nice upgraded components like suspension, wheels, t-case, new leather seats, etc.

were doing just fine with what we have. i dont see a point in doing that unless your trying to break some kinda record and make over 900hp, i dont see the point??!

found a little more info.

the engine code is 8A80 and the only cars it's been an option in is the Proudia and Dignity, huge FWD luxury boats, fairly expensive (around 50-60k), and fairly rare, as they didnt sell very well and were only available for 15 months.

HOWEVER, both vehicles were developed in partnership with the Hyundai Motor Company. Their version, the Hyundai Equus has proven more successful, and this has been the sole application of the powerplant since 2001. After a facelift in 2007, this car is to be sold in the United States, marking the first time the 8A80 will be available outside of its domestic markets. (thanks wikipedia)

So...wait until that Dog-eater Hyundai comes out and rob it from one of those lol.

Displacement — 4498 cc
Bore — 85 mm
Stroke — 96.8 mm
Compression ratio — 10.7:1
Power — 206 kW (280 PS) @ 5000 rpm
Torque — 412 N·m (304 ft·lbf) @ 4000 rpm

If u wanna try, go for it. But I think one of Ray's stroker kits would be alot less of a headache.

Yeah a 4.5 stroker 6g74 would be much much easier, stronger, and probably cheaper.

ditto, it may be a v6, but the displacement would be the same. Not to mention, if you TT on top of that, you don't want 10:1 compression ratio, your better off with something in the vicinity of 8:1 - 9:1, if your looking for big power with TT that is.

Oh I agree, it's certainly not the most money efficient means of HP. Like I said, it's a 2 year project, it's the kind of thing Dad does more as a project for fun, rather than to supe up his car. He's expecting it'll cost around $20,000 in the end. As money would go, I agree. It's a pretty expensive undertaking, but it's more out of intrigue than anything else. It sounds like we have a hookup as far as shipping goes, and yes, he's looking at the equus out of Korea, to at least get it over here in a cheap fashion. After that it's all tinkering. As it stands we're not completely sure it will work as far as space goes. They're looking at a transversely mounted engine, which is one style the Proudia/Equus came as. That at least gives them the width to work with it, but it could turn out to not fit in the end.

To my knowledge this is the first time it's been tried with a Mitsubishi V-8, so there's not any research out there for it. As we get closer to acquiring the engine and the alike I'll letcha know.
