How to remove a corvair head that is corroded

I am trying to rebuild a 1967 Corvair engine. This engine sat outside for a number of years and water condensed inside. Apprently the heads, cylinders and cases are corroded together. I am looking for ideas on how to seperate these parts.

Whatever you do, don't use anything made out of metal: pry bars or flat blade screwdrivers will gouge the case. The challenge is to get the cylinders off first. You'll just have to use your imagination along with wood blocks and some type of pry device to pry the wood blocks only. Is there an aircraft parts supply shop near your area? You can often rent the tools used in splitting the case without causing damage. That's the direction I would go. Small airplane engines aren't much different than that Corvair engine. In fact, some kit planes use a Corvair engine as their power plant.

will the engine turn over with the starter? If it will then undo the head bolts put the spark plugs in and turn the engine over a couple times. Sometimes the compression will push the heads off.

Nhoth2o, You're right! Why didn't I think of that? If cranking the engine can develop say...100 psi, you can multiply that by the square inches of the piston. For example, if a piston top has 10 square inches, that would be equal to 1,000 lbs. of total force. Maybe the head bolts should be only loosened instead of removed completely to keep the head from blowing-off. But still, cranking the engine is one hell of an idea.
