Question electronic throttle system (ETS)

I have a 1999 V70 wagon and my ETS light just went on. The car is acting sluggish. The cost is very expensive to replace. Approx $ 900.

The guy at the local gas station said try and clean it. Has any one had this problem? Does it work? And last where is this throttle so it cane be cleaned?

Thanks

FYI---In regards to this problem you have to called Volvo North America. They picked up the cost of the work. This info is not in the dealers. You have to call Volvo direct. They were very helpful. They called the dealer ASAP and set up the entire job. The totla cost of was $962. I paid Zero.......

We had a similar problem (also had intermittent starting problems); the fault code was traced to the Electronic Throttle Body (i think that's what it was called) and yes, it cost about $900 to replace. This year Volvo V70 (and a few other models/years) have had problems with the throttle controls. Something about the resistor inside wearing down.

Some private group is on a crusade trying to get Volvo to recall it; but Volvo is ducking out of it. You might find some where (it was on this forum but I think it was moved) where they talk about it; I'm not sure what the status is. There was a lot of information/postings on it.

You can also go to the NTSB website and make a formal complaint - they know of the problem and the more claims they get the more data they have to go to Volvo to try a recall.

Good luck.

Re: electronic throttle system (ETS)

There is a new service recall for the ETM (Electronic Throttle Module). Go and ask your dealer about it.

Re: electronic throttle system (ETS)

I just talked to my dealer, and he said I should have received a letter about this, but I didn't. (I guess they really are trying to keep it quiet.) Dealer checked my VIN and a database and said I should be covered, so I sent the info off to get reimbursed... I'll believe it when I see the $$$. If this works, you ARE the man!! Thanks!

Cool Re: electronic throttle system (ETS)

I recently had the same problem with my 2000 S70. To make a long story short, Volvo has extended the warranty on the part -- the electronic control module (ECM) -- to 10 years or 200,000 miles, whichever comes first. When the module fails, Volvo's warranty protocol requires the dealer to first clean it and see if it will work, and if the "codes" are cleared. If it does, and they are, the dealer has to send you on your way until the ECM fails again. Then they have to clean it again and see of the bad codes go away. If they don't, then the dealer can replace the part. This is what happened with my car. There is also a software upgrade that is now available at no charge. The first time the service people at the Volvo dealer I frequent installed the new software, they uploaded the wrong program and about a week or so later, the check engine light came on. So it was back to the dealer for me. They then uploaded the correct software for my car's ECM and so far, so good.
