'04 Transmission Issues 3.0 AWD
The transmission has been acting up and going into "safe mode" (only giving me 2 gears) when it is raining or really damp out. It sometimes throws the Transmission Fault warning but corrects itself. The last time I drove it there was no light on but it took awhile to engage into first (not sure if it bypassed 1st or not) but no warning lights were on. Took it to the mechanic and it is not showing any codes in the computer history. Everytime he drives it, shifts just fine - go figure. He also cleaned all of the sensors for a potential bad connection a month ago. Any help would be appreciated.

I wonder, if the X-type has a bad cowl,see Boot(trk) + Bonnet(hood) Flood.

Re: '04 Transmission Issues 3.0 AWD
Your TCM is getting wet when it rains. Water travels down the hood release cable and into the car and drips on the TCM. Put some sealer or silicone all over the hood cable and grommet where it enter the car at the left rear of the engine compartment. Better yet, the best fix is to spray that whole are with rubberized under coating. Then no water will get it.

Thanks for both replies. I gave the silicone a try. Just have to wait til it rains to put it to the real test best I have a feeling it will be in the form of snow the next time we get precipitation.

Re: '04 Transmission Issues 3.0 AWD
Update: It did rain a couple of days last month and had no problems. It may have done the trick! With below 0 temps now, I don't think any rain will be falling in the near future!

Re: '04 Transmission Issues 3.0 AWD
It happened again. Ended up being a gap between the cowl and the windshield. $1800 later to replace the TCM it is back on the road. Err...

Re: '04 Transmission Issues 3.0 AWD - TCM
Nope - did not fix the problem. Water is still getting in there, which I found out after the past couple of days that it was raining. Guess the cat does not like water...
