Question Saab 9-3 Wanders All Over Road

I have a Saab 9-3 sedan with around 120,000 miles on it. I drove it recently, and it does not feel safe to drive. The steering not only feels loose (I have to turn the steering wheel A LOT just to make simple turns), but it also wanders all over the road, and on narrower, curvy roads I always fear hitting the curb. I believe the reason that it's so worn is that the car has hit many, many potholes, since I live in the New York Metro, and the roads around here are absolutely terrible. My dad stubbornly insists that the car is safe to drive even though it has been several months since the car has seen a mechanic. How do I convince him that just because a car SEEMS safe doesn't mean that it is?

Dezso, just curious if you still have the 9-3?
if so, what was the fix on the soft and soggy steering wheel?
was it a torn or worn steering shaft rag? or a rack-n-pinion issue?
just curious, thanks.
